Studio Prep (and other things)

Patrons!

How's your weekend going? I Just wanted to share with all of you some pictures of my newish and developing home studio. The nice thing about being a keyboard player (in the 21st century) is the ability to do a lot of work away from the studio, via midi, virtual instruments (vst's) etc. I also picked up an incredible Audient ID4 audio interface to capture the audio from some of my analog gear. In addition, I got a KRK 10' subwoofer, and it is really helping me shape the low end of the mixes I'm working on (see Sky Chase). So part of the process of doing the keyboards on this record is capturing the midi data beforehand, and then shaping the sounds in the studio; Some things I cannot prepare for, for example, anything that needs to be recorded acoustically (Upright piano, Grand Piano, Rhodes, B3), but many of the synths, ESPECIALLY the digital synths, I can create the content remotely, and bring the midi information to the studio, where Jeff (our producer) and I can shape and process the sounds themselves through his hardware and software.

Anyway, for all of you out there that might be curious about the recording and audio production process, or have any questions about my gear, software etc. ask away!!

For those in Maryland, or nearby, lets hope it stops raining soon.

-Joe

Todd! I have a mixture of audio and midi/vst data going to my laptop. Maybe I'll do a rundown of my gear sometime soon in a future video. To answer your question about VSTs, I mainly use Omnisphere and Keyscape (Big Spectrasonics fanboy) in addition to Strobe2, Roli Equator, and the Arturia suite. Also love the GForce mtron and string machine plugins. I've also been working on some "game music" as a fun side project, and use a plugin that simulates some of the older 8-bit synthesizer chips called Chipsounds by Plogue.

Joe, love the studio pictures! What is your go to keyboard--is it a VST or a standalone keyboard? What software do you like for the VSTs and for recording?
