Borges 3 - Funes the Memorious

Craig and James interrupt the Borges essay on Time to do another story, one that very likely influenced Severian. "Funes, the Memorious" is about a young man with a perfect memory, a frighteningly perfect memory, perhaps even a terribly perfect one. Or a transcendent one. We hash it out, but you get to decide.

Full text of the story can be found here.

You can also listen through a regular podcast app. It takes a minute or two to set up, but it's not hard at all. Here are the instructions.

Oh! That’s awesome. Very clarifying.

Just reread the story and listened to the podcast--great stuff! I know I'm late on this, but thought I'd offer a little something--I noticed the phrase "triple-faced response" came off a bit awkward and opaque. This occurred early in the story during the narrator's first encounter with Funes, just after Funes is asked the time by Bernardo and responds, "Four minutes till eight, young Bernardo Juan Francisco." His statement is then referred to as a "triple-faced" response. My translation (Andrew Hurley) has the phrase in question translated as "the other boy's trinomial response," in reference to the use of all three names, rather than being some colloquialism for two-faced or deceptive. Thought this could help clear that detail up, as I'm sure we're all still loosing sleep over it...
