"Juno Rising" - Poster design breakdown
Added 2018-07-15 14:08:30 +0000 UTCAs promised, here is the breakdown of the design of the 2018 Eurofurence Pawpet Show poster. Pan Hesekiel Shiroi took on the task to create this promotional piece of artwork. At first, she came up with a number of sketches for the overall design of the poster. You can see how a number of different themes are explored:

These were then turned into color studies to set the general look and feel:

The team voted for design number #10 (bottom right corner), and Pan went ahead to create a more detailed color block for this design:

The next phase shows Sina as a pencil sketch, setting the proportions for the character and the pose:

On top of that, we get a rough block out of the general body shape to create a first spatial sketch:

This was recreated as a cel shading design, playing with the colors and lighting:

To stay consistent with the rest of the character design, the shoulder protector was colored black instead of blue:

Now it was time to add soft colors, fur pattern and general shading to the picture:

To enhance the spatial impression, more shadows were added:

At this point, Pan decided to remove most of the black outlines on the space suit to give the image a more realistic feel:

Finally, highlights and reflected light to the shiny parts of the suit are added. Sina's character is now complete:

Moving to the background, Pan first started with a starfield background and a line art trace of one of our 3D renders:

This was then painted over for color blocking, shadows and surface definition. Some glow is visible that reaches into the vastness of space:

Adding a beautiful sunrise behind the curvature for dramatic effect:

... and a bit more glow around that ...

... until the final compositing and lettering completes the creation of this piece.
