Martial Arts Legends Magazine Presents: The Ultimate Fighting Championship

I think this might be one of the most interesting and important MMA finds for me. Finding contemporary opinions and articles on early UFC events is tough: sure, we now have plenty of documentaries, podcasts and articles that feature the main players regurgitating the same old stories, but actual written content is hard to come by outside of a handful of small features in Black Belt magazine and the like.

So to find a magazine from 1994 that features a wealth of features, interviews and photographs is a massive breakthrough! Sure, some of this info will be known to us already, and maybe some of it will have been debunked in the past 28 years, but this is vital context to these early UFC events.

I have included nearly the whole magazine here, omitting one major piece on Royce Gracie of which I have pulled quotes for 'The Guide to Pride 1'. Once that documentary is complete, I will also post that article in full. But here you will see articles about early UFC fighters such as Ken Shamrock and Minoki Ichihara, interesting op-eds about the future of the UFC, and coverage of two of the most violent events in MMA history in UFC 1 and UFC 2.

This was not cheap (around $60) and to anyone that follows me on Twitter you will know a lot of the money you guys kindly send me on this here Patreon gets pumped back into combat sports acquirements to then send back to you guys as content!

I hope these screenshots are readable, and I hope these 60-odd pages keep you entertained until the next piece of exclusive content I put out! Thanks as always for your support of my coverage of the past and present of combat sports!

This is pure gold. Thank you for uploading this.

So fucking cool! Weirdly enough, I watched a Panther Productions video about using Savate for self defense because youtube recommended it. It was fun to see that Ad in the magazine.

Jack McReynolds

Oh, it’s brutal lol!

Kyle McLachlan

There’s SO much McDojo at the end of the magazine because there’s a 10 page VHS catalogue some of the maddest shit ever lol maybe I’ll upload it at some point

Kyle McLachlan

That's so cool. Love the old martial arts instructional course ads as well. "Green Dragon" teaching you the "White Eyebrow Tiger" and "Poison Double Serpent Spits out Poison Double Daggers" sounds so McDojo.

Arran Deans

Cool! Thanks, Kyle. I have the UFC 1 dvd but it’s a tough watch. No wonder the Heavy Hands boys put it first on their top events to show to new fans, while also adding “the sport should have been banned” haha
