Combat, Chronicled: The First Great Bantamweight
Added 2022-10-04 20:42:20 +0000 UTC'Combat, Chronicled' is the new PATREON-ONLY series for standalone documentaries, and the first episode is all about Miguel Angel Torres, the great 135lb mixed martial artist. This 45-minute documentary looks at Torres' starts in club fights, to reaching his peak as one of the most renowned pound-for-pound operators in MMA, to his eventual fall, and tells the story using primary sources, tape study, and tries to best contextualise Torres' career within his era.

This is the best review I could get: that this episode made you watch Torres’ fights! And yes, given the gym wars he had, no surprise he dropped off.

2022-10-06 12:13:05 +0000 UTCWas totally unfamiliar with Torres before this. Just watched his first four WEC fights - holy shit what a fun fighter to watch. Also based on the things Mir was saying about his training habits, it’s not very surprising that he fell off as hard as he did. Definitely sounds like a guy who left chunks of himself in the gym

2022-10-06 11:52:37 +0000 UTCThink the next couple will be boxing related. I think it’d better focusing on single fights/rivalries, so KID’s GP run or his fight with Masato might qualify!

2022-10-05 14:20:17 +0000 UTCNot sure when but I’m pretty certain ‘Shogun vs. Dragon’ will be one of the ‘Combat, Chronicled’ episodes! So I will cover ‘The Machida Era’ in more depth then!

2022-10-05 14:19:24 +0000 UTCThis was fun! Enjoyed the nostalgia. I remember the online forum battles about p4p greats with Torres always being a sneaky underdog in the late 2000s. Then being shocked when Bowles won and being sure Bowles was unstoppable. Also, you should do a two minute episode on the Machida era.

2022-10-05 13:21:25 +0000 UTCThat was a great episode! I 100% agree with saying that Miguel Torres was truly the first great bantamweight of MMA. I think the audio documentary style really pays off when narrating, and I enjoyed having ambient background music as well. As for suggestions, maybe a look towards Japan with Rumina Sato or Kid Yamamoto next?

2022-10-04 21:41:41 +0000 UTCThanks mate, I hope so. Hard to balance it all as I’m sure you’ll here in the episode. Trying to tell the story while sprinkling in context as I went along. I think it made for a fun episode, I hope you agree!
