22/09/2022 UPDATE

Hi guys, just to let you know the script for the Torres documentary is nearly finished. About 75% of the way there and completely sure of where it’s going with the end in sight. Pretty great story of a pretty great fighter to be honest!

A little mini-announcement about it is that it’s going to be the first episode of ‘Combat, Chronicled’ which will be the series of one-off documentaries that don’t slot into an existing series. To be honest, the earlier Thurman-Prouder documentary could’ve easily fit into this as well, but that was also a ‘Closet Classic’. Production is therefore not complete because I suffered an injury earlier this week that required treatment and rest. But I am working on the script day and night to bring me closer to production, which I hope to be this coming weekend. 

So the big one for October is The Guide to Pride 1. Here are some updates on the production of that episode, which will probably be the most in-depth thing I’ve ever created, and I don’t just mean for this patreon feed! I mean EVER. 

So:

• Japanese sources are being translated to English as I type. 

• Pre-Pride is somewhat written. Very interested and important context which takes us from pre-World War II Brazil through to the 1980s Vale Tudo, through to Japanese pro wrestlers creating their own brands of MMA in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s. To know why Rickson vs. Takada was so important, we need to know what happened before! This will be part of the episode, not a prologue episode or anything, hence why this is such a huge undertaking!

• Interviews have been carried out with a pro wrestling and MMA historian regarding Takada, and with The Fight Site’s Tommy Elliot regarding Rickson. These will not be podcast episodes on their own, but soundbites from both will be spliced into the episode as you would hear in any documentary. I may edit these into standalone episodes as double-bonus episodes though. Assume this will be welcomed by you guys?

The episode will probably not be completely finished in time for the actual 25th anniversary of Pride 1. But on that date I will upload scans of the official on-site Pride 1 programme and the official Pride 1 pre-fight magazine for you all to look at and to mark the anniversary. So there will be content on that day, but the episode will probably land a week or so later! It will be worth the wait, I promise!

For November: after The Guide to Pride 1 I will be needing a bit of a rest, so I’m not sure what content i will put out just yet. Any preferences? A new ‘Closet Classic’ perhaps? I say this because I will be writing and starting production on the next episode of ‘Combat, Chronicled’ which will come out in December and mark the 40th anniversary of—in my opinion—the greatest fight of all time, Bobby Chacon vs. ‘Bazooka’ Limon IV. This is a story Hollywood couldn’t make up, so I hope it will be worth the wait!
