patreon

An update for now, and the plan for the future

Hey everybody! I have been looking into changing things up a bit and I was wondering what everybody things about having actual patreon perks beyond just the occasional key drop that I currently do. The keys I get are a mix of game keys given to me by game devs/game advertisement companies and the humble bundle monthly subscription of games I am not really interested in so I was looking at ways to make things more rewarding for you guys, the people that help keep the channel funded and running.

It is kind of a tricky situation for me because I want to give more to you guys without locking things behind a paywall. Any suggestions of perks that would give you guys something more than the community in general?

I have been looking at some options for expanding the community and one thing that I feel is a good idea is a discord channel for everybody in general that I would advertise in videos and pinned comments so the community would have a more "live" place to talk about things like videos, mods and stuff related to things that happen on the channel and stuff like that with an extra room for people like you who contribute where I would be more active than the standard rooms.

I have also considered (but kinda against it) an extra patreon only series of what ever you guys vote on the most (within my interest, of course). I am not fully sure about it but something extra for you guys would be nice.

This year is going to be an interesting one. Since you guys help keep this channel going I feel obligated (I want to anyways, but on youtube I don't want to be "baggy" about it) to give some updates on how things are going. This year is going to be an important year for me. I am 26 and living with my parents. While they tell me I am not allowed to move out because rent is cheap compared to moving out, and I do a bunch of stuff around here, it would be nice to actually have some independence. Moving out would also mean more time for getting stuff done on youtube, and probably also having the ability to stream regularly in the evening without worrying about interruptions or noise I have no control over. To be able to do this I got to figure out how to increase my general income by about 50% between January of this year to June of this year to be safe. So far this year that has been going well. Youtube last year was real bad for ad rev but this year has been noticeably better, which is good for the future of this channel.  This year will be the decider for me on youtube. I ether got to find a way to make enough to keep things running, or I will be going back to work with youtube being a side thing that is less frequent overall.

Along with that youtube stuff, if you have been following on twitter this year you might have heard about about some stuff I have been working on. I am in the process of buying an old MMO war game. While I am not going to give out the name yet, it is a game that I have played for many many years. The game is long dead and is selling for a reasonable price. I have been in talks with the games owner since late December and it has been an absolute pain in the ass. He is terrible with replying to emails but every reply gets a step further to actually owning the game. While it has been very stressful, once the deal finally goes through it will mean a new addition to this community. It needs a lot of work and my friend and I have lots of things we would like to do with it to modernize and expand it from its current state. At worst it will pay for itself and at best it will do well enough to make online stuff cover the cost of existing so that I can continue to do what I have been doing.

If all things go poorly this year then I will have to go back to doing what I did before youtube. As I said at the start, it is going to be an interesting year. I hope that things go well enough to continue but there is no guarantee that things will continue in the not so near future. We will see I guess. I figured that the least I could do is give you guys an update on the current going-ons with the channel, and my life.

Thanks a lot for all the support, I really do appreciate it. I hope you all have a great day/night!

Play with your viewers, maybe have a day on twitch to play multiplayer games, even just trying them out with viewers lol

I plan on a discord once I move and get things sorted so that would be a good place to have more communication with the more avid fans from this community. Making 2 videos per day right now is not an issue and once I move I will have quite a bit more time to work with and I plan on even more stuff. Asking for support is not really my thing, even patreon was a hard thing for me to do which is why I rarely mention it beyond the endscreen of each video. I never have been super comfortable accepting money from people so trying to push for more isn't really something I want to do even if it would help. As for more popular games, thats a real tricky one since I generally am more of a fan of the less popular indie stuff over the big popular things. Jumping onto [insert popular game name] band wagon would probably have done wonders for the channel, but at best I would probably enjoy it for a short time, then leave due to a lack of actual content. A lot of the popular things right now tend to be things like fortnite where you literally just do the same thing over and over, each game might be different but how many times can you drop into the same map, kill a hand full of people and try to win a match. The popular games I do enjoy generally have the problem that they are multiplayer, and I play them alone since I generally enjoy games more when playing along. Battlefield 1 is a great example, I got like 300 hours into it, all multiplayer and I really enjoyed it, but videos of a mediocre player playing a multi player game alone isnt exactly great for content :P

Sorry it took me a bit to get back to you. The discord is not set up yet. I am trying to figure out other perks to do a full roll out of patreon changes at once.

Did I miss Discord getting set up?

Name in game is planned for the patreon overhaul. I used to do it back when the channel was smaller but it got overwhelming with name lists like 50 people long for rimworld and people asking every single episode "when am I coming in?!" By the time I got to some names they were not even watching anymore since a rimworld series could last quite some time so it became quite mess to deal with in the end. Doing it through patreon is much better though since I can reward those who contribute while keeping the list smaller and cleaner. Just trying to figure out a few other perks before I roll out the overhaul.

Sorry I'm a new patron here but... what about name-in-game? Maybe you've done it before and didn't like it but perhaps a $5 tier where you use our names for characters in the games you play would be a good idea?

I'll second the twitch presence! I've recently been getting into twitch and it's fun to be able to have a live conversation while watchingstreamers.

I realize that I’m a bit late in commenting here, but the way forward re. making money on this endeavor really seems to be streaming. You have a great vocal presence and your Youtube videos are already very enjoyable, so I think that you’d be good at that. Twitch would help you expand your audience + get more income in the form of donations and subscribers, especially if you put some attention towards the trends re. what people in the strategy community are watching. I’d certainly watch + subscribe + participate in your streams on a regular basis if you did so. Maybe look at how Aavak manages things - I think that you two are comparable in quality and that you can find yourself working towards a position like his with only a few adjustments. Otherwise, keep it up, and GL on the game + moving out!

Yay, First on the list hahahah. Keep it up bro!

I have already talked to them about it and at the beginning I planned on having K4 (long time community member and friend, but she does not comment much) and myself keeping things undercontrol. I did tell the two guys that were running it that they would be first on the list for being mods though if the community there got bigger. And no, I don't play any mobas. Literally the only game I play online is BF1 and the game I am in the process of buying. Doing a podcast could be fun but I don't have any friends. While people say this more of a joke, I literally have no real friends to do it with XD I have one person I talk to regularly but generally speaking it would not be podcast material. Generally speaking I am a very solo person. My favourite games are single player and I am not much of a people person... which is kinda weird considering the whole youtube thing. I have also considered game reviews but I am pretty picky, and pretty cheap when it comes to games. This is the main reason that there is not too many different games feauted on the channel. I generally find the occasinal game that I REALLY like, then go with that till it is dead. I am not a big fan of most game types but the city builder/colony/sandbox type games really do it for me. It makes for good overall constancy in game type but it makes for a bad overall number of different games. I find it hard to find something that I can play a ton over the course of a month or two while a series goes on and keep enough interest to enjoy it. Thats why things like rimworld can last for years... it just hits all those important things that I want in a game and until something can beat it in gameplay and quality, its hard to replace.

Hahaha dropping everything and starting a new life works for some people, but its not really for me. I'd like to live in Canada and most places worth moving to would cost around the same as things cost here.

Ya it does seem there in interest in discord so I will set that up. I have been thinking about doing it already and somebody already set one up for the community and was linking it in the comments and a few people joined, but I will have to make my own so I can properly link up Patreon and Twitch. I am not sure what, if anything would make for an exclusive Patreon only series but I do play a hand full of other games besides what is/has been on the channel. Most non-youtube games are ones that I play for a short time to mostly screw around in and then never really play them again. Civ 5 is one I go back to regularly, but I play it in the slowest most boring way to watch possible. I also only play one single multiplayer game and that is Battlefield 1, and that is not super common. I have seen Darkest Dungeon but it was not too much interest to me.

Lol I was replying on my phone, so I couldn't do it there, but if you hold shift and hit enter, it makes a new line. It's nice c:

Just a note, I have thrown everything i owned away and moved continents several times over my life time. Never regretted it and ended up having a fun life (so far). My advice: throw it all away and follow your heart (but have 3k in the bank in case you screw up bad). So first up, for you, save 3k!

Sounds like I might have to quit dragging my feet and sign up for Discord. Has your internet and computer situation become stable enough to do a live stream once in a while? I'm not sure how a live stream would effect your channel but, you are nearing the 50k mark and it might be a cool thing for that milestone. Maybe a Ryan Q and A for the stream? Have you considered adding more long tail videos to help with the overall channel? I think you'd be able to make some pretty good ones. Things like, How To: Do a game build timelapse comes to mind. Or, how to mod Rimworld. Etc. Maybe you could start up an import company (what I'm actively doing) through Amazon instead of going back to what you did before. The Jungle Scout YT has a lot of info about this. While independence is nice, it's easier when the money is already stable. We'd all hate to lose you due to having to work. I moved out as soon as I turned 18 and only now at 27 am I sort of comfortable. Mostly because I live in a semi truck and don't have to pay rent :P I live vicariously through gamers like you because I don't have time or energy after work to play games. Are you and your buddy planning on sprucing the game up? Might be interesting since you're the only one who would have it. I agree with the above, it would be cool to play multiplayer something with you. A paragraph was supposed to go in here somewhere but, it's not letting me format. I'm distinctly uncomfortable with my text wall being unformatted, thanks Patreon. /rambling

I advocate for the discord idea, I've replied with a few people on YouTube about it and it seems some people are interested. As for the patron only perks.. I mean... a series for us would be cool, but that's definitely too exclusive. Do you play any other games besides the ones you record? If they're multiplayer, we could join in I suppose. That's always a neat privilege. Also, I think you might like Darkest Dungeon. It's a chill game, more of a sit back and stream game lol
