Dev Build Update: Player Overview Overhaul (Mar 1, 2024)
Added 2024-03-02 02:15:24 +0000 UTCHey everyone!
Today's patreon build is a huge one and we're incredibly excited to get this into people's hands - the best player page ever made 😎. Here's the highlights:
- Character + Stage data filtered to convenient contexts
- The player's recent events, filtered to convenient contexts
- A list of the player's notable placements
- A list of the player's notable wins
- Report cards that now work for all players instead of just top players
- Quick views for a player's winrates in different important contexts
With all these views combined, our new player page gives you a curated summary of a player's notable info without you needing to hunt for it yourself. Oh, and the best part is: you can pull up this info without even leaving the event page 😲🕶️🤏.

What counts as Notable?
We're still fine tuning this, so it'll likely keep changing over the coming months! But basically, we consider a placement notable if:
- It's at a ranked event (and higher tier events are more notable)
- It's at a large event
- It's at an offline event
- It's a good placement in bracket
- It's a strong or weak SPR
A notable win is:
- At a notable event
- VS a ranked opponent (and the better their rank the more notable it is)
- A big upset
- VS A good seed
- Later in bracket
We've got a points system in our backend that takes into account all the things listed above and determines just how notable a placement or a win was, and then we sort all our matches/placements by those notability scores. These values are a powerful heuristic for us to use and seem to work well enough as a recommendation system.
How are the Report Card Tiers defined?
We take all ranked players in our database (~220) and compute their report card values for each metric. We then sort the values and make the cutoffs work so:
- S is the top 15% of players
- A is the next 15% of players
- B is the next 30% of players
- C is the last 40% of players
This works well for majors, but in the future we'll want to use a different pool of players for "All" and "offline" because picking the best players in the world artificially drags these tiers up.
So what's next?
After this, we've got the website, Melee, and custom player groups… And it's all coming sooner than you'd think!
