Konheads Episode 1: Perfect Blue (1997)

Content warning: Discussion of heavy subject matter such as stalking, rape, and parasocial obsession.

We begin our deep dive into Satoshi Kon's feature film output with of course his first feature, the mind-bending parasocial masterpiece Perfect Blue. We have a wonderful little conversation about the film, its handling of its dark themes and just how well it executes on all those themes. This is one of those films that just causes you to subconsciously compare it to other landmark pieces of art, so get ready for a lot of that in this episode. Despite the troubling subject matter I think we manage to talk about things in a frank way that doesn't take way from its weight while also providing levity to still make it a fun episode to listen to.

We hope you all enjoy and join us next time in a couple weeks for our episode on Millennium Actress!

wyatt: beaver appreciator made me lose my shit. stoked for this series!

So glad I caught this in cinemas last month. I was so paralysed by it, just sat in awe for the whole credits. I also thought about a lot of people probably not liking what a defusal the final scene is but I think it’s what really made the movie stick for me. I think Perfect Blue is my favourite depiction of paranoia and psychosis and it’s definitely something that at the wrong time could’ve totally fucked me up. I thought about that a lot while watching it and I think the movie being tied together through reflection on such a horrible time that mima eventually gets through was extra resonant for me. Such an evil name for the series btw I absolutely love it
