PowKiddy X18S LineageOS Beta #7 (Android 12)
Added 2022-07-23 17:55:08 +0000 UTCThis took longer than expected (life has been busy), but here it is: Android 12 for the PowKiddy X18S!
This build should take care of most of the issues that plagued the X18S crowd like Magisk soft-bricks, R3/L3 mapping, shoulder button ergonomics and other small issues.
The APT-X codec support from my RG552 releases also trickled into this one, bringing lower-latency Bluetooth audio to those that own APT-X adaptive headphones.
The full changelog can be found below.
How to install: Download and install 7zip on your system, download all attached files into the same folder, extract the file ending with .001 by right-clicking it and choosing "7-Zip -> Extract Here" and finally open README.txt for further instructions.
Things to note when updating from a previous build: When asked whether you wish to format your device or not, choose YES. Previous Android 11 builds will NOT update cleanly to 12 otherwise. Backup your data before updating!
For those needing root: Magisk comes pre-installed, and yes, it is now safe to update as well.

- Added a XBOX / Nintendo gamepad layout toggle (use XBOX for apps & most emulators, Nintendo for things like Drastic or when your muscle memory demands a A/B & X/Y button swap)
- Added a L1/L2 & R1/R2 shoulder button swap toggle (this should help ergonomics a bit)
- Added a toggle to swap the G- and Recent Apps button into R3/L3 mode (for games that require clickable analog sticks)
- Fixed a location service related crash that could occur inside Chrome
- Fixed a looper related crash that could occur inside SystemUI
- Fixed a bootanimation rotation issue
- Fixed the HDMI SystemUI status bar inset values
- The device is now kept awake while plugged into an external monitor
- Added a Galaxy S11 fingerprint (to silence GMS)
- Ported the touchscreen mapper to Android 12
- Fixed an issue in X18STool that caused failed flashes
Regarding the new black X18S model
Do NOT install this build on the new black X18S!
The newer model features slightly different hardware which makes it incompatible with the gray X18S firmware!
Separate builds for the new black model will be published at a later point in time!

While I do respect the work you're doing and and am happy to contribute, this, admittedly, was the big incentive for me to join (I don't own any of the other devices you offer perks for, and I didn't even have a Patreon account beforehand), and, really, the only reason I was able to justify to myself buying the Powkiddy x18s. With all that said, I understand that the blame is on me for not doing more research. I understand that you are busy with your GarlicOS projects, but is there any chance you are still looking at making custom firmware for the black model, and, if so, is there any kind of approximate timeline (even if it's "year XXXX" or "Quarter X of year XXXX")?

Now hold down the volume button and plug in your X18S (which should start the first flash cycle), keep holding down the volume minus button during the whole process. Click on Stop All, swap tabs again, re-select everything, swap tabs again and click on Start All. With the volume minus button still held, unplug and replug your X18S, it should start flashing again and this time around it should work fine. (Yes, it's tricky, but that's the way BeTools works...)

The USB cord I was using wasn't transferring data and the Betools required me to hold the minus key on my X18S down through the whole transfer. Thankfully everything is good now. Oh hey, not sure if it helps but I figured out how to get the perfect l and r triggers. Just cut the springs a little, stretch them back to the right length and put a little dab of epoxy on the tip (where it would press against the board). Hope this helps you have even more fun with this device. FPS games drove me nuts before I did this

My hunch is that somewhere in input flinger Android is losing the device ID of the input device, filling it with the default -1 value instead. This happened before in early versions of 10 as well and was a big discussion point in the AOSP mailing groups... I figure this might be a comeback of that very same bug in 12.

2022-09-06 14:30:04 +0000 UTCHey Black, This issue is specific to the PowKiddy X18s. The reason why I’m suspecting a possible os issue is because this wasn’t an issue under Android 11. So, specifically when running the Dolphin emulator, the analog sticks will not function. They work within the app, but not in game even though mapping the controls wasn't an issue. They mapped just fine, and the analog sticks were responsive then. No other app is doing this as the analog sticks otherwise function properly in every other instance. Also, it doesn't seem to matter what version of Dolphin, mmjr, mmjr2 and also the play store version. They all have this issue on my PowKiddy X18s. It’s a weird and very specific problem. I even tried mapping the controls for each specific game in custom settings. nada. My other handhelds don't have this issue. Seems to plague only the X18s running any version of Dolphin, otherwise the analog sticks work just fine. Again, not sure if this is specific to Android 12, but when the device had 11, this wasn't an issue.

2022-09-06 14:16:03 +0000 UTCRegarding the HDMI control-issues I was having, I ordered a USB-C cable to see if it still occurred during wired operation. Turned off Bluetooth just to be sure. As before, playing on the X18S screen was fine, but through HDMI was still no good. I only tested racing games in PPSSPP and EPSXE using X button as accelerator - it would accelerate for a second and then ignore input. Hope this helps - I don’t need a reply.

2022-08-06 21:33:09 +0000 UTCThat's because Trebuchet, LineageOS' default launcher doesn't always pick up on framebuffer rotation changes. You can work around this by long pressing on an empty space inside the launcher, going into Home settings and disabling & re-enabling home screen rotation. Devices that don't require HDMI framebuffer rotation obviously don't suffer from this issue, but the FPGA on X18S (sadly) does. The real solution to this issue would be either swapping the Launcher for one that handles rotation better or spending a few weeks debugging Trebuchet to see where the dog is buried.

2022-08-06 21:11:25 +0000 UTCI have a weird little problem. Got it installed fine on my X18S (from a Mac) and it's nice and quick now. I paired a 8BitDO SN30, configured in EPSXE and PPSSPP and both work great, until I hook up HDMI. Then the controls work only for a second or so at each press. Scrolling menus, in-game play etc. Press the accelerator in a racing game and it works for just half a second and then nothing. Press it again, does it again. Hold the down button to scroll a game list and it scrolls for half a second and then stops. Unplug from HDMI and it works fine. I tried with a 8BitDo Pro2 too, same problem. Tried both XBox and Nintendo modes.

It's your handheld, you're it's owner so don't be afraid to use admin rights by using su. And no, it's not a low priority thing. There's just things I'm not aware of and I don't own every gamepad out there so I can't easily check them all. This is why I told you how to get me the piece of information I need to help you out and implement this feature you wanted. And no problem, I'm just a tinkerer at heart that loves making things better!

I'm a tad disappointed but I also understand that this isn't exactly a popular request so it went under the radar. Well, between the RG552 and the X18s, I'm pretty much done. Was just wondering, you know the trick you used for getting the xbox controller to register as an analog device for the RT and LT triggers on the RG552 for xbox Game Pass? Well, would you be able to do the same for the Switch Pro Controller on the X18S? The ZR and ZL buttons register, but not as analog switches and thus the buttons only work partially. Thanks!

It essentially uses a 1280x1280 framebuffer that uses two rotated 1280x720 outputs to either deliver the internal (portrait) or the external (landscape) image.

It's sneaky because it just rolls on along with the installation indicating everything else is ok, so it's easy to miss. After using that I had no issues at all. It's great that the panel is usable when connected via HDMI (much better), however, would be nice to have it still lit up at the same time. Otherwise easier to use. Thanks for your hard work!

2022-07-25 15:12:15 +0000 UTCSome apps are not able to read button presses of R2 or L2 until you switch the controller to the Nintendo option. Mainly tested with Mantis Gamepad. Worked on Android 11 if that helps.

Mind running the gamepad through something like gamepad tester? While also keeping track of the reported device ID inside the tester?

After using that I had no issues at all. This update makes it a lot easier to setup. Without having to use the terminal and setting up lite gapps. Thanks to you, I absolutely love my X18S! Your work is amazing! Keep up this amazing work!
