2025-01-28 18:59:03 +0000 UTCChurches use either wine or grape juice, depending (of the three churches I was a part of as a kid, Episcopals and Lutherans did wine and wafers; Presbyterians did grape juice and real bread. It's likely a church-by-church decision and not a whole-religion thing). It's blessed before using, that's correct. Before the blessing it's just regular food. The magic words make it magic Jesus stuff. Fun fact: whatever isn't drunk during the service has to be consumed afterwards rather than thrown away (at least for the Episcopal church). The minister and lectors (adults who do readings and help with the service while wearing kicky robes) went and drank the leftover wine after the service.
