15 days after the monthly campaign change. The state of things. Ideas.

Alright. It's been a nerve rollercoaster for me this last two weeks. But apparently the monthly gross amount of patronage has stabilized the last week or so. I'm going to be a little real here. I lost a worrying amount of your patronage with the switch. 1/3rd to be precise. I was getting roughly 2k USD (2,2k on good months) with the weekly system before, and with the switch we went down to 1451. That's roughly 1/4 in USD, but 1/3 in mexican pesos, which is the currency I get, after the conversion, Of course I'm sad, sure. But there's no culprits, i guess. The change was meant to be better for the patrons and it would give everyone a little more certainty and transparency. I can only think the rewards I offer today for bigger pledges aren't as attractive as they were on their compressed, weekly versions, or maybe it's just a matter of impulsiveness from the patrons when they join up, I don't know. I only know i'll keep doing my best to get back to where we were and more! It's not -critical- or anything, (I feel like i'm complaining and I certainly have no reasons to!) I can still make a decent living with what I get today (which i'm super duper grateful thx ;W;!!) , but it's just, well, sad :( Now, i want to implement some changes, because -something- definitely has to change. And i wanted to hear your opinion and your feedback on it. Right now I only have a couple ideas: The first one, would be changing the "silver ribbon-get access to the after-hours archive" feature and turning it into a reward for those on the $40 tier. I couldn't do this in the past because there was no sure way to measure a precise amount of pledging money from the patrons, because the monthly limits, but now it's right there. I feel $40 a month is very reasonable right now, for what, 6-7 comics? eventually a lot more? Would you put your money into something like this? :O My second idea is, well, not patreon related, but more about the other stuff I do. Live sketch commissions. I would keep the $40 pricetag, but I would start charging for characters (that sounded more reasonable than upping the global amount of 40 up to 50 or 60 but idk O_o) probably something between 10-20 USD per character. Does that sound too terrible? >_> I've been going around streams lately and i've seen a lot of other artists changing a lot more than I do D: and it's been an entire year since the price got to $40. Perhaps it's time to nudge that pricetag a little :S? Hum, what else can I think of... I can't think of anything else I can give :S Most people seem interested in the after-hours comic, so anything resource-related doesn't sound very good (like making tutorials or how-tos and stuff, which is something rather common on patreon pages) Maybe a raffle pic?? People seem to do that a lot S: Maybe keep it between $20 patrons and above? I really need to push the 20 and 40 tier a lot more, because those were intended to be the main attractions here T.T Any ideas? P.S.: I'll make a pool soon (tm) about taking an after-hours day out of the month for answering tumblr questions, cuz people really dig those and it would be a good way to promote the patreon page a lot more :>! Pic related, it's a whole internet just for you, for reading this massive wall of text.

Keeping them both is definitely a possibility to consider. It rewards those who stay awhile, and those who give a lot in less time. If I remember correctly, the silver ribbon is $100 given, right ? Considering I (and probably a lot of people) pay you $20 a month, if I pay one month and up my pledge to $40 two times, I go straight to $100, and earn the silver ribbon. If I'm reading this right, it would make the silver ribbon super-easy to get... Going only the $40 tier way would guarantee you consistent ups for some patrons for a month's time. Or maybe add a required $20 minimum to have access to the archive.

under the old system, $1 patrons didn't get access to anything NSFW, so they didn't get it. I'm planning on keeping it that way :o

Ah I had assumed you had to be backing at the 5 a comic access to after hours level in order to get it

Ian Wolfe

this is correct.

It's currently just silver tier and active patronage at any level, AFAIK

I don't really understand the jump to 40 for access to past comics. Wouldn't it make sense to make it the 20 dollar tier + you need to be silver since that's what it was before? I usually wait for the full comic pdf before I dl anything so I kinda rely on the archive D; I am ashamed to admit I forgot to change pledge level after the monthly switch so that's where 15 bucks went lol

To chim in on the commission thing. I also would say that the upcharge per character is a bit hight if you go above 10. I would however not mind a highter base price of 50 to 60 but might suggest a max base characters of 3 then. beyond that maybe do an upcharge on characters. 2 feels a bit small but that might just be me cause I like to do 3 characters quiet often but beyond that when it goes to 4 or above I'm willing to pay extra. I would also say maybe do a small extra fee on possible higher detailed background where you draw like rooms and stuff in it. maybe +5 for easy quick things that go beyond just white background and +10 or 15 for more detailed stuff. but yeah thats just my 2 cents on specifically the sketch streams.

I like Your idea for the archive access its fair and a nice reward for being in 40 tier. About the sketch commission idea is that 40$ for commission with one character? then $10-20 for each other character? Mm personally i'd vote for the price change and pay 50$ a sketch commission with two characters which most usually are and then $10 for each character beyond that. I still think you'll need to stress the point that more characters still means less quality. The idea of a raffle sounds like a pretty cool ;) would it go through a cycle? or will the winner be chosen like the sketch-comm stream?

silver ribbon OR $40 tier for the archive? I haven't thought about that :O! nice

Kenno Arkkan

I suggested that he keep the silver tier AND add the 40/mo tier bonus access to that archive. Even if he has 10 comics and the person just does one month and then drops down to 5/mo, that's 35$ for 10 comics, or 3.5$ each, which I think is more than average sale price for those (normally they're ~2$ I think? So it's still a win because it's a bunch of extra comic sales, and it gets someone put into a higher tier, which they might like and stay in. I tend not to like raffles exclusively, but I'd say raffling a few sketch comms at the 40 tier would be another good incentive. But that might overload 40 in comparison to 20 maybe? Not sure how to manage that. As for tumblr asks, even if he did them frequently, it's easy enough to upload them here all at once so you don't have to scroll through tumblr. For comm prices, I agree 10-20 per char is high. I'd either suggest a low base price (20) then 15 per char, so that the "average" commission with two chars is a bit cheaper, and those that get lots of characters pay more. He'd have to work it so that the quality is consistent then. So my preferred commission thought is to just increase to 55 for the same thing he's doing now.

Hm. That changes everything then. If you define a pattern to have one day a month, I'm all for that idea. (Wednesday of the second week of each month for example) Do point-out that it will be one day a month, I don't think it is obvious the way you put it. :)

about the tumblr thing, it would only take an after-hours day A MONTH. not like, once a week :P that would be ludicrous D:! And thanks a lot for your feedback!

Kenno Arkkan

I don't know what to think about the $40 archive change. I think the whole silver ribbon thing is quite nice and rewarding for those that gives continual support. If I'm reading that right, the whole silver ribbon thing is a bit harder to manage ? If that's the case I'm all for your Idea but I fear that people will pay $40 once in a while and go back to their usual tier the next month. That means really inconsistent monthly income stats. If you're okay with this, don't think twice, the $40 change is perfect. For the commission changes, I don't really care, even though $10~$20 per character is a bit high in my opinion. You're the boss. I'm all for the raffle, it's an easy way to entertain a community, it's -pretty- participative (if you put it next to the after-hours community thing it gets lower, but hey, after-hours are awesome) and it allows new and fun things (for both you and us) to be created. I'm not really a fan of the Tumblr question day, but that is only because I don't really have much time to endlessly scroll down a huge Tumblr. Two after-hours pages per week is -in my opinion- "better" than one and a huge blog. In the end, you're the boss, do what you feel is right.
