Heyoyoo!
Here is Suzume illustration for the poll!
I watched the movie just before and really appreciated it.
Actually, I'm very happy that I went into painting again in this illustration, I was somehow avoiding it lately, and I think I finally may enjoy going back to it...
To say, I wanted to find an artstyle I enjoy mostly with flat colors and flat shading, but I was not very satisfied about it. Maybe since 2-3 years? I may have made kinda-painted art but that time, my process has been different:
- I sketched on paper (as usual)
- I took a photo and I search for the colors on my smartphone (second picture)
- I took the PSD file from my phone to the computer and made a clean lineart (with the nice Arqo's osusume brush)(I streamed the line if you want here: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1806150065 & https://www.twitch.tv/videos/1806151617 (french speaking)ร
- I started from the colors I made on my phone and painted over it until getting something cleaner.
As I make a clean line, it's not exactly a "full paint" work, but it still be more painted than what I usually did! Actually it's mostly about skipping the flat color step, that may make me thing differently about color, maybe less freely.
You can enjoy the full timelapse as attached file.
My main regret on this illustration is about Suzume's face, I think in many ways you can't understand it's Suzume at the first sight and it makes me a bit bitter. As a proof I just didn't sell a single print I made for the two event I went to last weeks! ๐ฃ (Thanks I printed a few because I was feeling already uncertain about it)
I know I want more rounded/cute faces (as I try to do since NIJIxHOLO book), I studied about it... But I feel I reach the nice cute thing only a few time over many tries. I was running out of time for this Suzume art, plus I wanted to finish it for my events, but I was also running out of ideas about how to save it. ๐
Well, even if it's a struggle point to me since a while, I still try and do my best! I hope somehow it will be interesting for you to read about artist issues. :>
