Posting/Tech Update

UPDATE: I got a very helpful guy to talk me through what’s likely going on. He’s thinking it’s a hard drive issue and if that needs to be replaced it’s only $180 which is not nearly as bad as I had feared. They’re keeping the computer overnight, so depending on when I can pick it up my Spoil Me! eps will have to be postponed. I will keep you all posted.

HOWEVER he also said that since my computer is almost 5 years old and memory has come such a long way, it’s possible this issue will return because the type of processor my computer has is less stable. He said, “If I were you I would plan to move to a more capable machine within the year.”

I really want to stick with Mac but idk if it’s worth it. $1500 minimum for a new desktop when the one dying on me feels relatively new still? How often do most people have to replace their PCs?

Hey friends, some of you may remember about a week ago when I posted that my computer had stopped working. I had been able at that time to restore from a back up and continue using it, but I have been running into problems anyway.

This has resulted in me losing an episode of Spoil Me, and apparently the error was so profound that it actually interrupted the Crowdcast recording as well so when I downloaded that back up it ALSO cuts off 15 minutes early. I am in touch with them about it and I hope very much I am going to be able to retrieve that episode in the end but there is going to be a delay in posting because everything has to go up in order, obviously.

I have an appointment at the Genius Bar today and will be bringing my computer for them to take a look at because so far this week I have had to restore from a backup three times due to getting a dreaded yellow screen.

Thanks so much for your patience, and my apologies to people commissioning Spoil Me! episodes for making you wait for your eps to post! 😖

If your computer is the old intel chip (I think pre 2020, but maybe they started in 21) the new m chips are SO MUCH BETTER/Faster. I just got a new m3 MacBook Pro to replace my 2019 MacBook Pro that couldn’t do anything anymore. I did supe it up a bit because I handle huge files for public art (like 10’ x 45’ images) but even the base models I was looking at without the extra memory blew my old MacBook away. Actions that were taking my computer half an hour or more to process this summer took 2 minutes on the new MacBook. I’ve only had it a few weeks but I had to dig back into the files I was working on this summer to fix some stuff that didn’t get caught in proofing and it was such a different experience than what I was doing. I was even able to do some complicated trims that my old computer couldn’t even accomplish (and in 5 minutes. Not and hour just to get a “I can’t complete the action” message and go cry) I don’t know much about desktops because I’ve been a laptop since 2004 person, but I hold out as long as I can because I’m alway broke AF. I’d replace them every 5-7 years to be able to do my work (mostly in adobe illustrator, but there are some other graphics and light video editing programs I use mainly for touching up documentation images/installation videos. )

I have a MacBook Air that I got in Dec 2019. It is my living, but I know I couldn’t afford a new one if something were to happen to it. I’ve recently started having some weird things happen recently, but I don’t really save much on it, most things are saved in the cloud, so not entirely sure. It’s my first Mac, so hoping we both don’t need replacements 🫣
