GF REACTS: IWTV - Ep.1X2 "After the Phantoms of Your Former Self" UNCUT & UNCENSORED

SHE'S HOOKED FOLKS >:D

Charging forward into my gal pal's journey through this "Fledgling's" christening! Learning curves and rough waters ahead, but we're here to help shepherd her through this emotionally harrowing journey!

As a reminder, for anyone curious about my "2nd viewing thoughts", I have allocated a portion at the end of this video to allow me to consult my notes, give any new opinions/takes and offer epiphanies and observations.

I agree about the two paintings reflecting Louis and Armand but I think it also has to do with the ‘time’ they came from. The Rembrandt represents the old world and is from the 1600’s while the New Orleans painting is from Louis’ time and the new world.

I’m really loving this rewatch with you both. Great job!

while it's never something that's been textually explicit in the show (at least 2 seasons in) jacob anderson has said in a few interviews that he personally believes the same thing about louis' bloodlust - that maybe the lady doth protest too much. i feel like there's something there metaphorically re: his shame/repression around his sexuality vs his vampirism. maybe the thing he's ashamed about is just how much he actually does want it, so maybe it feels safer to redirect those feelings onto lestat, who pretty directly represents both those things louis feels shame around.

On Louis and Lestat's caskets: I love the effort that went into their design! They tell us so succinctly about their backgrounds and how they contrast one another. Lestat's six-sided casket (and yes they are both caskets, not coffins, because they have hinged lids, I will die on this hill) is very ornate in style and hearkens back to 19th century funereal aesthetics, functioning as visual shorthand for his older, European sensibilities. Louis' casket, in contrast to Lestat's coffin-shaped one, is rectangular and therefore very American in style. It is sleek, stylish and distinctly modern, with its straight lines and comparatively minimalist look. It distinguishes him as a man of the New World in comparison to Lestat's continental, enlightenment-era background. I recall Jacob talking about his aesthetic preference for Louis' casket out of all those featured on the show, despite his being unfortunately uncomfortable to actually lie in lol

(Not for darkwave) Austin.. On your thoughts on Lestat being thick and syrupy. You are correct. Lestat is sincere.. He feels a great deal. Is very genuine with his feelings when speaking to Louis. And he DOES fear Loneliness.. and loves a great deal. It's one reason why people get so defensive of him.. Because they know the character intimately. (You should definitely read the books once you get ahead in the series) I also noticed your struggles not to spoil things for your lady partner in this episode in almost wanting to defend things because you know the story now and I am sure you now understand why others do the same in your comments lol. His view of humanity is ever changing and I think Louis helps him with that a great deal.. And may be one of the reasons he chose him. To keep him attached to his own humanity. In this universe Vampires are known for choosing partners who can keep them attached to times and parts of themselves they may lose through time. And this is not a spoiler.. On the painting Daniel notices.. By Marius De Romanus. (this is said in the show) Armand does reveal that Marius was his maker in season 2. "A contemporary of my maker. Marius De Romanus" Not to be confused with Magnus.. Who created Lestat.

Valid. His presentation is what leaves much to be desired.. and thats where I question the perspective of Louis. I would be curious to know what the ACTUAL words were.. Lestat is self admittedly a brat though. Lol.

For the second watch through: I think it’s worth noticing how many things Lestat tries to teach Louis in this episode that Louis doesn’t want to learn or even hear. For example, absent yourself from your family before you hurt them. Or, you will only find peace when you accept your vampire nature. So Louis blames Lestat for teaching him nothing, but simultaneously rejects many lessons Lestat tries to give him. Later, Lestat’s warnings not to go to Paris, and that the European vampires are vicious, are also ignored and framed as manipulative, rather than genuine.

I’m glad you like the show so far, Darkwave! What do you think about Louis and Lestat so far? Would you trust either of them to water your plants while you’re out of town?

Valaree

Good call on not looking into the Marius painting further. It’s definitely an easter egg for book readers. The rest of the art in the penthouse is spoiler-free and DAMN did they put thought into it. https://www.thepopverse.com/tv-interview-with-the-vampire-production-design-decor-amc-deep-dive

Dying at the mention of vampire peeing because…from the (not yet officially online) trailer released for season 3, that’s comin’! (Spoiler I guess, but just an itty bitty silly one). I’m loving these so much! Already looking forward to the next one.

Moving forward, will you post the time stamp for your closing commentary? :)
