Jimmy Stewart blamed Donna Reed for the movie not doing well. They didn't speak to each other after that She did get the last word by winning the Best Actress Oscar for From Here to Eternity.

So the whole Mary is an old maid thing is commented on and criticized a lot and I do largely agree, but it is a product of its time and that was seen as a scandalous thing back then. However, I have a different way to look at it. Mary was a outgoing, fun woman and she became a very loving mother. In the dark timeline, she's not any of that. For all we know, she didn't even go to college, so she may have been stuck in Pottersville and never got to go anywhere and never got to be her full self, a self she got to be with George. That's why her being an old maid was so sad because she never got to live life, Also, Married With Children did an episode like this that flipped the idea on its head. IT's about a disfunctional family and the father, Al, said he wished he'd never been born, so an angel showed him that life and his family is super happy and the angel feels like he fails, but then Al says that he's not going to let his family be happy after all the grief they put him through and he wants to live. It's a great spin on the idea!
