Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Full Reaction)

2027 is the 3rd one as of right now. SO we have have a long ways to wait.

Stephen Hert

Yep. That too

Connor Vide

Plus alot of animators in studios hired by Sony, Pixar & other studios quit because they were overworked and underpaid.

Alvin Everett

The third one was supposed to come out in 2024. But while it’s not cancelled yet and we’re like 95% sure it’s coming out next year. A few months ago t it was delayed indefinitely with no release date because they just don’t know when it’ll be finished The animation takes a long time, and a bunch of industry strikes happened as well. And on top of that Sony just had the intitial Release date without knowing if it would even be possible to make it for that date But still a great movie! And great reaction

Connor Vide

Lol 😅

I was looking forward to this but didn't expect it to come so quickly. Fun stuff as always! Gwen's story really hurts me to watch too; it's just so tragic. And as a longtime comics fan: yeah, that is VERY much the way life treats Peter Parker, and by extension almost all Spider-people. I love how Hobie (aka Spider-Punk) just pushes through though and does what he knows is right. Chaotic Good punk anarchist socially-conscious Spider-Man is one of my favorites. And Miguel... well. He's one of the two primary antagonists in the series, and I have no idea how this will play out. He's sincere and intensely driven and will do anything to make sure he doesn't fail, which is, well, something one can say about most of the very worst villains. Thanos and Red Skull and the High flarkin' Evolutionary would defend Miguel's every action in the abstract, which is not company you really want to be in. But... I trust he'll be a hero though. He really wants to be. He's trying to be. He is in the comics, though he has demons, obviously. These are two of the best Spider-films out there in my opinion, and I hate the delay on the third. The delays are... complicated, from the sounds of it, and worrisome. But speaking of Spider-Man movies, you've seen the notable ones, and enjoyed them all as far as I know. I don't think you've ever watched a Spider-Man show though, and some of them are quite good. There is a recent animated Marvel show that's widely acclaimed as one of the best Spider-Man animated series ever made, and it's not part of the MCU and not tied to any previous project. It's a completely new take on Spider-Man where things happen... differently. Characters who were never part of the Peter Parker story before are now front and center, and most things you'd expect to happen... don't. Or not the same way. But it's a GREAT Spider-Man story from a new dimension we've never seen before, told over 10 episodes of around 30 minutes each (including credits). Not a huge time commitment and I'm certain you'd really enjoy it. And again, it's not part of any timeline, just its own thing like the Spider-Verse movies. Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man is on Disney+. It's a multi-season order. Season 3 is greenlit, and Season 2 production is well underway. They plan for annual releases of this and X-Men '97. Incidentally, YFNSM is popular with critics and audiences (ranked 11 overall on Disney+ when I write this), but reactions are limited. There are some VERY fun voice cameos, too.

Love watching you theorize!

Jax I'm curious where you would rank this in overall Marvel content, movies and shows. I think this is only behind the Endgame movies and Loki series.

BIG MATT

*Spoilerish meta information warning* I don't think he's evil either, and am pretty sure Miles is using the Prowler persona to fight the "sinister 6 cartel" with Aaron as the "guy in the chair." There's an unused test clip of that miles that implies as such.

Excuse My Brains

Oh, also... in the flashback from The Spot, where he's talking about having stollen a spider from another universe... that spider was headed toward someone who looked a lot like Earth 42's Miles... so... I'm not convinced that he's evil. He was supposed to be Spider-Man for a reason. I think he will end up helping.

Michael Morris

This movie is... phenomenal. It is... strange for me how the overall vibe of this movie and the vibe of the first movie... have lined up with elements of my own life. The first one coming out while I was still in the middle of a big leap of faith, and the second one... coming as the doubts and pressures of others rather put an end to that leap of faith's intended trajectory. I was left having to assert who I am, and my own agency in my life... even as I was closing in on 40 XD The journey never ends. Now, it is funny that you picked up on Hobie's voice being familiar. You do know his voice actor, though from live-action. He played Wakabi in Black Panther. You also know Pavitr Prabhakar's voice actor from live-action! I was so happy that Dopinder (from Deadpool) got to be a hero at last XD I've got to say, though, Hobie is my favorite character in this one. You've got to re-watch it knowing what game he is playing all along. One of the amazing things about the character is that he works so hard to come across as a joke, all while he's being honest the whole way through. "I'm not a hero, because calling yourself a hero makes you a self-mythologizing narcissistic autocrat." That's... Miguel that he's calling out. He tells Gwen to build her own multiverse wristband... and as he is walking through the spider society, he's stealing seemingly random bits of tech for... no readily apparent reason, and he's fostering grass-roots relationships with the more marginal members of the spider society. And then... in the end, we realize that it was all to set Gwen up to 'start her own band.' After all, "I'm just looking out for my drummer." Heck... he's even the one who taught Miles how to best use his venom strike against the shields. It comes across as being flippant when it first comes up, but he KNOWS that Miles is going to need to be able to use it to break energy shields. Hobie is playing the long game from start to finish, and it is beautiful. Also, for as long as the gap between seasons 1 and 2 of Arcane felt... they STILL had a faster turnaround than these Spider-Verse movies >.< Across the Spider-Verse was supposed to come out this year, but the writer's strike pretty well wrecked that, and... Sony has been digging itself one heck of a grave when it comes to their Spider-Man properties in the last couple of years... Please, Jax... do NOT watch Madame Web...

That's not a phone, it's a graphing calculator.

Spider-People Lore, only a few since there's just too many :D Peter B. Parker (Earth-616B) Peter B. Parker is basically the closest thing to the mainline Spider-Man, even using Earth-616 as his universe designation (the same as the mainline comics) though they added a "B" in Across the Spider-Verse to differentiate it from the comics. He went through all the iconic Spider-Man moments from the comics: losing Uncle Ben, the death of Captain Stacy, losing Gwen Stacy, marrying MJ, etc. However, there are a few differences, such as Peter B. Parker being Jewish, the first film even shows him breaking the glass at his wedding. In his universe, Green Goblin, like Miles' version, is also a big, hulking monster, which is unexpected. You’d expect them to use the classic Green Goblin from the mainline comics, Norman in a Goblin suit riding his flying glider. This could simply be a case of reusing assets, but they did go out of their way to create a comic-accurate male Doc Ock with metal tentacles for both Peter and Gwen’s universes, so who knows. But overall, Peter B. Parker is the stand in for a mainline Spider-Man. ============================================== Miles Morales (Earth-1610B) Miles Morales, along with his universe, is based on the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610), even using the same designation but adding a "B" to differentiate it from the comics. In the comics, Earth-1610 was the reality Miles came from, taking up the mantle of Spider-Man after the death of a 16-year-old Peter Parker. Readers had been following Peter’s journey since Ultimate Spider-Man (2000–2011), which covered his life from ages 15 to 16 until his death at the hands of Norman Osborn, the Ultimate Green Goblin, who was depicted as a massive, monstrous creature. Something worth mentioning is that Earth-1610B has some unique changes to differentiate it from our own world. Brands have fictional names, like "Koca-Cola" instead of Coca-Cola, and the NYPD is called the PDNY, something also seen in Gwen’s universe. There are also unique historical and cultural changes that reinforce that Miles’ world is an alternate reality when compared to our own. On the other hand, Peter B. Parker’s universe, Earth-616B uses real-world brands like Coca-Cola and has the NYPD, making his world feel much closer to our own. In contrast, the Ultimate Universe (Earth-1610) in the comics used real brands and were filled with pop culture references and connections to the real world. The Ultimate Universe played with this a lot, blending fiction with reality to ground the stories in a more modern and familiar setting. Unlike the movie version, which warps things around to make them seem, alternate timeline-y. ================================================ Ben Reilly (Earth-616) Ben Reilly first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #149 (1975) during the original Clone Saga. He is not from an alternate universe but is actually a clone of Peter Parker from the mainline Marvel Universe, Earth-616. Peter was shocked when Gwen Stacy seemingly returned, as she had died just prior in The Night Gwen Stacy Died (1973). It was later revealed that Miles Warren, aka the Jackal (one of Gwen’s former college tutors obsessed with her) had cloned both her and Peter, blaming Spider-Man for Gwen’s death. The Jackal lured Spider-Man to his lab, where Peter faced his clone. Their battle ended in an explosion that seemingly killed the clone. However, the 1990s Clone Saga revealed that the clone had survived. He took the name Ben Reilly, Ben after Uncle Ben and Reilly after Aunt May’s maiden name. In a controversial twist, Ben was led to believe he was the original Peter Parker, while Peter thought he was the clone. This upset many fans, as it suggested that the Peter they had been following for the past 20 years was a clone. Believing himself to be the clone, Peter left New York with Mary Jane, allowing Ben to take over as Spider-Man. Eventually, the truth was uncovered: Ben was, in fact, the clone, and Peter reclaimed the mantle of Spider-Man. Ben then became the Scarlet Spider in 1994, wearing his iconic red suit with a blue hoodie. To avoid recognition, he also dyed his hair blonde, which occurred when he developed the name Ben Reilly. In Across the Spider-Verse, Ben Reilly is a variant from Earth-94, a reference to the year Web of Spider-Man #118 (1994) was released, his first appearance as Scarlet Spider. He's a more exaggerated portrayal of the character, very ’90s comic aesthetic artstyle as well. ============================================ Spider-Punk (Earth-138) Spider-Punk (Hobie Brown) first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #10 (January 2015). A punk musician, he gained powers after being bitten by a spider mutated by toxic waste, thanks to Norman Osborn. He leads his Spider-Army (not actually Spiders) in a revolution against the corrupt President Norman "Ozzy" Osborn and his corporate-controlled regime. Hobie is a variant of the original Hobie Brown, who debuted as the Prowler in The Amazing Spider-Man #78 (November 1969). Aaron Davis, Miles Morales’ uncle, is the Prowler in the Ultimate Universe, not the mainline comics. However, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and the Spider-Man games have made Aaron’s version the most iconic, leaving many unaware that another Prowler existed before him. ============================================ Insomniac Games' Spider-Man (Earth-1049) Speaking of the games, you can spot Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man (the one with the white spider logo). He’s dubbed "Video Game Guy" by Lyla (Miguel’s assistant) and even points to himself, saying, "Are you talking to me?" He’s also voiced by Yuri Lowenthal, his voice actor from the Spider-Man games, Marvel Rivals, and various other projects. He first appeared in Marvel's Spider-Man (2018), followed by Spider-Man: Miles Morales (2020) and Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (2023), all amazing games. ============================================== Spectacular Spider-Man (Earth-26496) The smaller Spider-Man who speaks to Miles during the scene where he's debating Miguel is Spectacular Spider-Man from, well... The Spectacular Spider-Man (2008–2009) animated series, which is amazing. You can even see his Peter Parker looking over his Uncle Ben when he was shot in the Uncle Ben node. He’s also voiced by Josh Keaton here, reprising his role from the animated series, as well as various games. Keaton has even made a cameo as a Spider-Man-inspired character in a non-Marvel show, twice. ============================================== Spider-Noir (Earth-90214) Introduced in Spider-Man: Noir #1 (2009), this Peter Parker was raised by his paternal aunt and uncle, May and Ben Parker, during the Great Depression. He grew up believing in the triumph of good over evil and supported his aunt and uncle’s activism. Tragically, Peter discovered the mutilated body of his Uncle Ben, who had been murdered in retaliation by one of New York City's businessmen for organizing a strike against sweatshops. Ben’s death at the hands of the Goblin strengthened Peter’s resolve to seek justice. One day, an ancient artifact known as the Spider Idol broke open, releasing a horde of spiders. One of them bit Peter, causing him to pass out and experience a vision of a Spider-God. When he awoke, he discovered he had developed arachnid superpowers. Determined to use his new abilities for good, he donned a mask and became a hero. =============================================== Spider-Man 2099 (Earth-928) Earth-928 is a possible future of the main Marvel Universe (Earth-616), shaped by a devastating war between mutants and humans during the Age of Heroes. Many heroes, including Peter Parker, perished. In the aftermath, powerful corporations seized control, ruling with an iron grip. By 2099, society had become a dystopian cyberpunk landscape, but a new Age of Heroes emerged, including Spider-Man 2099 (Miguel O’Hara). Miguel, a geneticist at Alchemax, worked under Tyler Stone, who sought to create a new Age of Heroes inspired by the legends of old. After a test subject died, Miguel confronted Stone, who retaliated by drugging him with Rapture, a substance that altered DNA and caused lifelong dependency. Refusing to be controlled, Miguel attempted to restore his DNA but was sabotaged by a jealous coworker, who replaced his template with an experimental strain designed to replicate Spider-Man’s powers. The process cured him of Rapture but left him 50% arachnid. Realizing his newfound power and Alchemax’s corruption, Miguel vowed to take down Tyler Stone and dismantle the corporate tyranny ruling over Nueva York, becoming the Spider-Man of 2099 in Spider-Man 2099 #1 (November 1992). ================================================ Spider-Gwen (Earth-65) Introduced in Edge of Spider-Verse #2 (2014), Gwen Stacy was born in Forest Hills to George and Helen Stacy. After her mother’s passing, she was raised by her father. Her free-spirited nature and artistic inclinations often clashed with his strong ethical principles, leading her to find solace in music, particularly playing the drums. She formed a close bond with her introverted neighbor, Peter Parker, over their shared love of music. At Midtown High, she joined a band called The Mary Janes. After being bitten by a genetically engineered spider, Gwen gained superpowers and became the crimefighter Spider-Woman. Retired hero Janet van Dyne provided her with a costume and web-shooters. Meanwhile, Peter, desperate to be special like his idol Spider-Woman, conducted an experiment that transformed him into a Lizard-like creature. He later attacked the Midtown Senior Prom, where Gwen fought him. Despite his pleas, she didn’t hold back. After suffering a brutal defeat, Peter reverted to human form but died from his injuries. Side Note: In this universe, Wolverine is originally known as Mr. Murderhands. However, after Gwen visited the main Marvel Universe during the Spider-Verse comics, she decided to refer to him as Wolverine instead, stating: "Okay, look, no more 'Mr. Murderhands' that name is way too self-fulfilling prophecy. Call him 'Wolverine.'” ============================================== Peni Parker (Earth-14512) Introduced in Edge of Spider-Verse #5 (2014), When Peni Parker was nine years old, her father died while piloting the SP//dr suit. Shortly after, her uncle Ben and aunt May informed her that she was the only one capable of continuing the project. Accepting this responsibility, Peni allowed the radioactive spider, which formed the other half of SP//dr’s CPU—to bite her, bonding her with the suit. Five years later, at the age of fourteen, Peni faced a supervillain known as Mysterio, who piloted a massive orb and unleashed hallucinogenic gas across New York City. Despite being exposed to the gas, she managed to subdue him. Later, Daredevil pulled Peni out of class to inform her that Mysterio had begun cooperating and had exposed an illegal biological enhancement ring. ============================================== Peter Porker (Earth-8311) Introduced in Marvel Tails Starring Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham (November 1983), Peter Porker was originally born as a spider, simply named Peter. He lived in the basement lab of May Porker, an eccentric animal scientist who had created "the world's first atomic-powered hairdryer," believing that "the introduction of nuclear fission into America's beauty salons" would "revolutionize the hair care industry." However, after dousing her head with water and activating the dryer, May accidentally irradiated herself. In a delirious state, she bit Peter, who was then transformed into an anthropomorphic pig—much like May Porker herself. Disoriented, Peter fled the Porker household, only to realize that, despite his new form, he still retained the abilities of a spider.

Yeah, when I realized that this was ending on a cliffhanger, I got PISSED in the theater. Love love love this movie. That ending reveal was awesome. The Spot is such a weird villain and this movie did an insanely great job of making him terrifying and he's not even really in almost half the movie. He's gone for so much of it, but his danger is always felt while they focus on the Spider-Universe for basically all of Act 3. The 3rd movie was supposed to be out already, but the strikes caused a lot of delays for it. 2026 is what they hope, but I've heard it could even be delayed until 2027!

Jax what is up with that tank of a phone case lolol

If you rewatch the first film, the moment Miles comes face to face with his Spider-man during the first battle at the collider, both their "spidey-senses" go off. But notice that the color scheme with Miles' senses start as green and purple before changing to red and blue. This seems to indicate that Miles was originally supposed to be a Prowler before changing in real-time to becoming a Spider-Man

Joel

your reaction @2:15:04 was the end of AIW all over again😄. which as we all know sucks. but p.2 will be epic knowing these guys😉👌🏾

I have A BUNCH of fun facts about this one. 1.) Remember how I said that some of the voice actors in the first movie would join the MCU a few years later? Well, we got a bit more Marvel talent in this one. • Oscar Isaac now has THREE Marvel roles under his belt. Chronologically speaking, Miguel O’Hara was his second role because his first time voicing him was for the post-credit scene in the first movie. Before then he was Apocalypse, and after he joined the MCU as Moon Knight. • Pavitr Prabhakar or Spider-Man India was voiced by none other than Karan Soni. You know him best from the Deadpool trilogy as Dopinder the taxi driver. He already confirmed that he’ll be voicing Pavitr again for the next movie. • Daniel Kaluuya portrayed W’Kabi in Black Panther 2018. Now he got to voice Hobart Brown or Hobie/Spider-Punk. 2.) The Lego scenes were made not by a team of animators but by 14 year old kid named Preston Mutanga. He has a YouTube channel under the name LegoMe_TheOG. 3.) My sister and I are from a Guatemalan family, and we grew up learning Spanish. So we were among the moviegoers who had a deeper understanding. A fun fact: Luna Lauren Velez, the voice actress for Miles’ mom Rio, has said that her mom was sad that she didn’t say que dios te bendiga in the first film. Her mom wanted her to call Phil Lord, one of the headwriters, to implement the blessing into the sequel. However, what Luna didn’t know is that her co-Star Shameik Moore had said bendición when he recorded. So when she saw the finished scene for the first time, she got emotional. Phil had also said that it was important to him for even 10% of the audience to understand what that phrase meant. 4.) Lenny, the shopkeeper who confronted Spot was voiced by Ziggy Marley. He’s one of Bob Marley’s children. 5.) When Hobie says he hates the a.m. and the P.M, he’s respectively talking about the morning and the Prime Minister. 6.) Four facts about Pavitr: • He wasn’t bitten by a radioactive spider. Rather his powers are magic based. • He fights using an Indian martial art called Kalaripayattu. A small animation team from Kerala was tasked to help animate Pavitri's movements. • His Spidey mask has design inspirations from Theyyam, a Hindu ritual from Kerala. • The head-writers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller invited Karan to the writers’ room to pitch in ideas for Pavitr. They were aiming for his character to be culturally specific. 7.) There’s no confirmation whether live-action Aaron Davis/Prowler is the same one from Spider-Man Homecoming. For all we know, this might be a What If situation. In other words, he’s from an entirely separate dimension/timeline. Speaking of which, the canon events are absolute points like what we saw with Strange Supreme in What If season 1. The way I understand it, the Spider Society is pretty much a Spidey-themed TVA. A major difference is that they don’t prune dimensions. Rather, they try to save them from collapsing. 8.) The Spider-Man who told Miles there was nowhere to run and then apologized to everyone for his mistake was record producer Metro Boomin’ making a cameo. He curated the soundtrack for this film. The deluxe edition has six bonus tracks aside from the main thirteen. And finally, my overall thoughts about this film: My favorite funny moments were Miles and Soot “dancing” at the coffee shop, Miles patting Spot on the head with the words “good cow” appearing on his head, Jeff asking Miles why he created him, Spot kicking himself and falling into one of his own portals, Spot‘s hypothesis and him saying his holes can take him anywhere, Pavitr’s introduction, Hobie not believing in comedy, Pavitr jinxing the group, Typeface’s helvetica and Miles’ bold, the finger meme times a thousand, the therapy session, and Metro Boomin’s cameo. Peter is a great mentor but also an irresponsible father for bringing Mayday to a steel mill with all kinds of equipment that can easily harm her. Although I did like that he acknowledged that Spider-Heroes are supposed to be funny. Miguel has the best of intentions with preventing the multiverse from collapsing, but I didn’t like that he called Miles a mistake and blamed him for everything that happened. Miles never asked to get bitten by a radioactive spider, but he’s doing his best and making the most of the situation. And finally, it’s weird but also cool that Earth-42’s version of J. Jonah Jameson and The Daily Bugle would actually support a Spider-Man rather than call him a menace all the time. Going into this, I knew we were gonna be left on a cliffhanger. This movie was originally a two-parter. They ended up renaming the third movie Beyond the Spider-Verse, but the concept remains the same.

I have a feeling this is gonna be your best reaction since Infinity War! 🤣😂🤣

oooo, was hoping this wouldn't take long :) was wondering after wicked if you were aware of the ending to this one.
