ted lasso is always a fun ride i hope when you finally finish this you might consider legend of vox machina (animated series created by critical role based on dungeons and dragons) or at least could add it somewhere on your list :)

Thank you so much!! I think you're right about Nate feeling abandoned when Roy and Higgins joined the group. There were so many subtle things that he was reacting to negatively. It was quite the build up to his eventual departure from Richmond.

Jacqueline

That is such a great point about the picture Nate talked about! Your insights on Nate's relationship with Ted are spot on.

Jacqueline

I had no idea that was what the original Shredded Wheat was like!

Jacqueline

I did notice it! I didn't realize it was an intentional change. Wow!!

When I first watched season 2 I noticed it in episode 10. It actually starts in episode 5, according to this article: https://www.vulture.com/article/ted-lasso-season-2-finale-nate-shelley-transformation.html

Mike Smith

I only his grey hair this episode. lol

Michael Short

Jax, did you notice Nate slowly turning gray over the course of the season? It’s supposed to foreshadow his villain turn. Personally I find that implication offensive!

Mike Smith

Fun reaction as always Jax! I'm glad you're enjoying the highs and lows of Ted Lasso. It's a lot sometimes in both good and bad ways, but it's about hope and kindness and getting through the bad stuff together, and I'm enjoying (re)watching with you.

Nate's real fall to the moral bottom this season accelerated when he offered to coach Isaac through his troubles and was dismissed. He was told, outright, that he was not good enough, and he held onto that. Roy was needed, and Roy came to help fix things, and Roy was everything Nate wanted to be but was not.

I think the unpopular opinion is interesting but I don't think I can reasonably talk about my thoughts without spoilers. Right with you on the rest though. Heck, Ted has Nate's photo in front of Henry's. Ted is trying hard to be the best version of himself, so he can help everyone else be the best versions of themselves. That's tough. He's going through a lot. In the first few episodes we saw him deal with divorce and rejection and his whole sense of self being challenged; this has always been a drama and a comedy. It's not lighthearted but it's about people trying to improve themselves, and that has ups and downs. And meanwhile, Nate has been (in a limited sense) an anti-Ted, driven by envy and resentment and dreams of revenge. Nate's not concerned with how others feel, because in his mind everyone else has always hated, resented, bullied, used, and/or mocked him. He just wants to be a Bengal tiger and savagely kill anyone who offends him. Looking forward to season 3. I know it's not as popular but I think the storytelling remains solid and there are some really good moments coming up.

So the giant cereal brick. Thats the original form of Kellog's Shredded Wheat. Nowadays , the Mini-wheats, but especially the Frosted Mini-wheats are more popular in the US.

I'm having a great time rewatching this with you! I'm really glad to hear you're going straight into Season 3 next week. 👍 The thing with Nate is best illustrated by what he said to Ted in that final conversation: "You don't even have the picture of us that I gave you up on your desk!" But that's because Ted has it at his house, on his dresser, next to a picture of his son. We see that in S02E10. But Nate doesn't know that. He's so self-absorbed in his own mental struggles he doesn't realize Ted doesn't have time for him because Ted is going through a really hard time himself. It's just tragic, honestly. Clearly, Nate lacks some emotional/social tools to deal with his issues with his father in a more productive way. Unpopular opinion: Coach Beard really messed up by not stepping in much sooner and pointing Nate to Dr. Fieldstone's office when he saw how Nate was treating Will Kitman.

Always love your reaction! Also love your earrings lol but yeah when it comes to Nate saying that he felt abandoned, I think it happened when Roy came aboard and Higgins joined the group - then it was no longer Ted depending on Nate for everything and it was the larger group. There was a bunch of very small moments that hinted at that. On top of that, Ted was dealing with his own struggles so he focused less on Nate. Does not excuse all the hateful stuff Nate did, but it does help me understand where it came from.
