Dune Part 2 (Full Reaction)

It's Movie Monday!! Dune Part 2 was just as incredible as the first part! I love how intricate this world is. The world building is phenomenal.

In the second part of Dune, Paul Atreides unites with Chani and the Fremen while seeking revenge against the conspirators who destroyed his family. Facing a choice between the love of his life and the fate of the universe, he must prevent a terrible future only he can foresee.

Do you have a favorite character? I think Chani is mine. It was also such a joy seeing all the new actors that have been welcomed into the cast. I LOVE Florence Pugh, so I'm rooting for her character as well!

Dune Part 2 (Full Reaction)

Comments

There are three books. The director said the next movie will be covering the 2nd book. I hope they do all three books

Dune: Part 3 is in pre-production and will be coming out! Denis Vileneuve has always wanted to make a Dune trilogy with 3 films. He's talked about it for a long time. It's true that this is the "end" and that we can sort of use our imaginations to know what happens next, since this is where the original 1965 novel ended, but there's more. Even though it's a massive book series, and the novels cover a huge timespan and go far beyond the scope of Paul Atreides, the second novel (Dune: Messiah) is a direct continuation covering the full events of what happens, so the first 2 books go together and tell the complete Paul story arc, and Messiah is shorter since it's like an epilogue. Regarding the tension between Paul and Chani you said something like "I wonder if it's like that in the books", interestingly it's not, in the books Chani was far less conflicted about Paul. It was a change made by Denis. I think it's interesting that you picked up on that. He clearly has plans to spice up the story in the third film, since Messiah wouldn't have much tension if it was adapted as written. Fun fact: in the book, the term "jihad" was used. I just think it's interesting that they changed it to "holy war" for the movie.

This took me a while to get to, but I was looking forward to it. And you didn't disappoint, naturally! One of the things that really stands out to me in this series is how many Marvel actors are involved. We have (roughly in order of appearance): Oscar Isaac: Duke Leto Atreides/Moon Knight Josh Brolin: Gurney Halleck/Thanos and Cable (from Deadpool 2) Dave Bautista: Rabban Harkonnen/Drax the Destroyer Zendaya: Chani/MJ Stellan Skarsgard: Baron Harkonnen/Dr. Selvig David Dastmalchian: (Mentat) Peter De Vries [Baron Harkonnen's advisor, killed by Duke Leto's poison gas]/Kurt from Ant-Man 1 and 2 and What If (the guy scared of Baba Yaga) and also Veb from Ant-Man 3 Florence Pugh: Princess Irulan/Yelena Belova Also, Paul's unborn sister Alia was played by Anya Taylor-Joy, who portrayed Ilyana "Magik" Rasputin (sister of Colossus, the big metal X-Man) in The New Mutants. Not a great movie, but she was superb. I also really appreciated how Austin Butler, playing Na-Baron Feyd Ruatha, really committed to mimicking the accent of Stellan Skarsgard. Stellan's accent is kinda immutable, and Austin leaned into it, normalizing it. The last time I can remember an actor doing this so thoroughly and well was when Bradley (Rocket Racoon!) Cooper did a really passable impression of Sam Elliot in the 2018 remake of "A Star is Born". As a total aside, the sandworms are absolutely crucial to the ecology of Arrakis/Dune. As we saw, the spice from Dune is what enables interstellar travel, and thus the entire Galactic Empire and all its economy. And the spice... comes from the worms. Well, from the larvae, as we saw. There are a LOT of Dune books, but really only the first two or three are generally beloved (or, for many, just the first one). By the fourth, things start to get weird, and then they fly wayyyyy off the rails in my opinion. I wouldn't hate seeing Denis Villaneuve attempt the first four, though I think a fair bit of rewriting will be called for. In my mind, that's really the culmination of the main plots and themes of the first book, and everything after that is just franchise-milking.

Wonderful reaction, Jax! Bene (from the Latin meaning ‘good’ pronounced ‘Ben’ay’) + Gesserit (derived from the Latin ‘Gestare’ which means ‘to be born’) Together, Bene Gesserit translates roughly to mean ‘Well (or noble) born’ 😊

Thank you Jax :)

Now that you're familiar with the Dune story, you should check out the documentary "Jodoroski's Dune" and see what an insane trainwreck (or masterpiece... you decide!) this movie could have been in the 1970s! edit: Not as a reaction, necessarily, for yourself. But if you want to share it with us... :)

The Bene Gesserit tv series "Dune: Prophecy" is in post-production right now and I think it premieres next year at some point.

YES! It's one of my favorite books ever! Highly recommend! The book goes into so much more detail on things like the specifics of worm riding and their weaponry and ancestry and history and more. There are a few differences in the movie in comparison, but overall it's like 90% accurate to the book and it's amazing cinematic perfection by Villeneuve and the cast and crew. And YES! there will be a third movie which will cover the second book (there's like 30 Dune books but the original 6 are generally considered the base) and it starts to get a little weirder each book but it'll be an even bigger step up than Part 2 was compared to Part 1, I'm sure of it. I always recommend that people read the first 3 books and then understandably stop there unless they really love how weird and wild it gets. The second book, "Dune Messiah", definitely further explores your earlier commentary about the dangers of the messiah complex realized. Can you believe that people think Paul is the good guy and is doing good things here? lmao. The author of the books wrote the sequels back in the day to shut up all the confused idiots and it's fantastic. Oh ALSO there's an HBO show called "Dune: Prophecy" coming in November that takes place 10,000 years before these movies and explores the creation of the Bene Gesserit! It also looks awesome! Thank you for another amazingly insightful and enthusiastic reaction! Can't wait to see what's next!

I think Paul's prescience (enhanced after the water of life) forced him to choose the only way ahead that didn't end in total disaster, as much as he feared the carnage that would result.

Robert Inman

Denis Villeneuve is working on part 3, which should cover the 2nd book Dune Messiah. So far at least he's not planning any movies after the end of this trilogy. But there's 6 books by Frank Hebert and more by his son and other writers.

David Bourgeois

The "maker hooks" are used to lift the edge of worm scales so the worm rolls up to keep the sand out. That way it doesn't go under and the rider can steer.

Robert Inman

Remember that Paul dreamed of Chani before he even left Caladan. The spice enhances his vision of realities. (Of course in the books he starts out as 15 years old)

Robert Inman

Thanks Jax! I hope you get to read at least the first 3 books. The movies are great but the director chose to take Paul's mother in a different direction from the books and had her encouraging his fate rather than fearing for him. The Bene Gesserit had been breeding bloodlines for generations seeking the Kwisatch Haderach (a male version of a reverend mother). Jessica choosing to give Leto a son made Paul's potential appear a generation earlier than planned. A reverend mother literally has access to the lives of all her female ancestors (which happened to the baby even before she was born). The Kwisach Haderach would have access to all ancestors male and female.

Robert Inman

Out of nowhere they announced a new prequel series on HBO. They’re calling it Dune: Prophecy, and it takes place 10,000 years before the events of the first film.

Aldo Gonzales

Woohoo. So happy.
