Spooky Movie Suggestions!

It's officially fall and spooky season is upon us! Halloween is a month away and I need you to suggest your favorite Halloween time movies!

*Since I am a complete scaredy cat, I won't be picking any horror movies for the polls. Feel free to suggest vintage classics, family films, comedies, or even horror parodies.

Last year's Halloween movies were: Tucker and Dale Vs Evil and Beatlejuice. I've started a Halloween collection on the "Collection" page. If you're ever looking for older reactions, you can find them there.

The poll will go up Monday!

Comments

-Happy Death Day -Cabin in the Woods -The Others

Raj Hudek

Based on your info I would suggest the following movies (not in a particular order): Happy Death Day 1 , The Frighteners, Little Shop of Horrors, The Sixth Sense, Gremlins.

Devilfrog

My favorites from the list so far for that lean further into fun than scary: Happy Death Day, Love and Monsters, Cabin in the Wods

Steve J

The Addams Family, Monster House, Hocus Pocus (1 and 2), Little Shop of Horrors, Scooby Doo (2002), Casper, Haunted Mansion (or Muppets Haunted Mansion).

Adam Doyle

I believe you will love The Addams family

Ido Gordin

I think Brendan Fraser’s, The Mummy, would be absolutely perfect for you. More adventure than horror, very funny with a great villain. Perhaps a good old fashioned Horror double bill with, The Mummy Returns? I’d give the third one a miss though.

Pete

Death Becomes Her would also be a good not so scary movie possibility

Future_Boy85

Love & Monsters isnt Halloween but it is rightttttt up your alley Jax!

Alexander Alayon Jr

What We Do In The Shadows, Shaun of the Dead, and the live action Scooby doo films (2002 and 2004). I feel none of these are that scary, and are more comedic with spooky vibes.

Grace Villeneuve

How sure are we that Willem isn’t some sort of vampire anyway?

Lamar Smith

It’s called “Shadow of the Vampire” if anyone is wondering. I enjoyed it a lot, although I’m not sure it would be as much fun without having seen the original. Might end up being Willem Dafoe’s third-best vampire movie, since he was in The Hunger and he’s in Eggers’ Nosferatu remake coming out at Christmas.

Alex Ch

If you put it all in one list, I can’t indicate support for a specific movie to add to the poll. If I see a list of more than five, I usually don’t bother reading it.

Alex Ch

I’ll second The Sixth Sense.

Alex Ch

Mike, just put it all in one list.

Aldo Gonzales

I love how many people didn't read your actual post about being a scaredy cat so no horror films, while they immediately list some super scary films. For me, based on your specifications, I'm going to start with "Shaun of the Dead" which is a rom-zom-com in my top ten favorite films of all time. It's a hilarious zombie film with some fun scares thrown in and it just celebrated its 20th anniversary. Then there's "Attack the Block" which is a super fun British sci-fi/action/horror-ish film that is just fantastic with great creature effects. It has a young pre-Star Wars John Boyega starring in it along with the fabulous Jodie Whitaker who was the first female Doctor Who and was so great in the fantastic British crime series, "Broadchurch". Lastly, I'm going to go with ... "The Wicker Man", which makes this a British film trifecta. It used to have the label as 'the Citizen Kane of horror films' and it's considered the best 'folk horror' film of all time. Almost more of a crime thriller but because of supernatural elements based around pagan rituals it slides into the horror genre. It also stars Christopher Lee, whom you might know best as the evil wizard Saruman in the LotR films. Just be sure to watch the original British film (if you watch it at all) and NOT the horrible U.S. remake with Nicolas Cage. I'm actually going to see a documentary in Los Feliz tomorrow about the true story that inspired this film and can't wait.

HeyHeyJK

Monster Squad is a great choice.

Aendery2k

I love cabin in the woods. A lot of the references might be beyond people who are not familiar with horror movies.

Aendery2k

Coraline is Great

Aendery2k

The Brendan Frasier mummy would be perfect if you haven't already seen it.

Aendery2k

... The Sixth Sense, Vanishing on 7th Street, 28 Days Later, Trick r Treat... still more

Gabriel Urias

Alien, The Descent, The Shining, The Thing, Halloween, Friday the 13th, Saw, Event Horizon, Poltergeist, Psycho, Critters, Gremlins, Child's Play, Nightmare on Elm Street... there's more

Gabriel Urias

Happy Death Day

Pearl Jam

American Werewolf in London is one of the very best. It is very funny, scary, but not more than Lamby can handle, and also with real feeling.

John Molt

Alien

Ron A

The mummy, Van Helsing, Zombieland, Tucker and Dale vs evil, Shaun of the dead, Young Frankenstein

Alex Gorell

Coraline Nightmare Before Christmas Sleepy Hollow (1999) Alien Ghostbusters Hocus Pocus Hotel Transylvania

Andy Munden

The two Zombielands are funny and mildly creepy.

Uncle Phoenix

Another voice for "What We Do in the Shadows" - I think it'll actually be right up your alley. And if you love it that much the TV Series spinoff is (IMO) even better.

Danny Roberts

Ernest Scared Stupid

Nathan

One of my absolute favorite classic campy films is The Legend of Hell House.

MotoDork

You should check out Coraline.

The Gunslinger

Coco Casper Warm Bodies (there are zombies and a few suspenseful scenes but overall not bad)

NotMyRealName

Gremlins is always a lot of fun, please.

Alex Ch

"Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein" which is streaming on Prime right now!

Horace Cocroft

This! One of the greatest horror / scare movies ever created

CatbookPro

Night of the Living Dead 1968 or the 1990 remake are both good.

LuMarq

And a very young Keanu Reeves

David Bourgeois

The Wicker Man (1973) Dracula (1931) Halloween (1978) John Carpenter's Vampires (1998) The Lost Boys (1987)

Tim Heron

Werewolf by night Beetlejuice 2 Young Frankenstein Ghostbusters 1 and 2

Wreath35

I recommend the following not so scary movies: ● What We Do In The Shadows ● Elvira: Mistress of the Dark ● Transylvania 6-5000 ● The Burbs ● Ernest Scared Stupid ● Werewolf by Night ● Ghostbusters

Future_Boy85

I agree with others that have said "What We Do In The Shadows" which is a hilarious mockumentary that also had a spinoff show which is amazing as well and is starting it's 6th season next month! If you think you can handle it, I think "Cabin in the Woods" would be a fun spoof type movie for you too! It's got some spooky parts but it's nothing too crazy. Maaaaaybe a step outside the box, but that's a good thing every once in a while!

DaftBasterd

You should watch Marvel's Werewolf By Night!!! It may be out of release order for you in Oct, but it is a 100% standalone project. It's just an hour and absolutely must be seen during spooky season!!

Rebecca Solomon

Hocus Pocus

Michael Morris

Alien

Michael Morris

Ghostbusters, Casper, Goosebumps, E.T, Firestarter [1984](It's Stephen King but not scary, more like a sci-fi thriller)

George Perez

Ghostbusters, classic.

BigBullyBusick

The Gunslinger

A movie we watch every Halloween is “Private Eyes”, with Tim Conway and Don Knots. It might not be a considered a “Halloween” movie, but it is to us. It’s a comedy rather than a scary movie. But would love to see your reaction to “Private Eyes”.

William

Silent hill! You'll love it

Lee Aguera

American psycho

Alvin Baca

Love at first bite or Mad Monster Party? Both of these would be pretty safe, but funny

Eric Guerrero

-Young Frankenstein -Monster Squad -Army of Darkness -Any Ghostbusters movie EXCEPT the terrible 2016 Paul Feig one

Brad Nelson

Don't worry I won't scare you! <3 Nothing SpOoKy but you could keep with the theme, anddo: - Godzilla Minus One - Ghostbusters - Clue (I know you loved Knives Out, and this one is great too as a whodunit movie) - Rear Window or Psycho (Excellent classic thrillers that aren't spooky by todays standards by are excellent, BEAUTIFULY filmed classics.)

Kay Douglas

Rated PG. Starring and directed by Gene Wilder. 1986's "Haunted Honeymoon". It was a family favorite, back when we all were young.

Richard Flores

It definitely counts as a Halloween movie as well.

Aldo Gonzales

Fright Night.. the 80s version

Fulscher89

The Nightmare Before Christmas is a good one. Though that might be more of a Christmas movie

Jason

Beetlejuice [1988] Beetlejuice Beetlejuice [2024] (aka Beetlejuice 2) 💀👻😎 Renfield [2023] Dracula Untold [2014] Hotel Transylvania [2012] Ghostbusters [1984] Ghostbusters 2 [1989] Ghostbusters: Afterlife [2021] Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire [2024]

PopeyeNelson

Coralline. It's good and not scary. Witches of Eastwick. Susan Saranson, Michelle Pfeiffer, Cher, Jack Nicholson, in a comedy about witches. Also the first two Alien movies are more suspense than horror, but they are intense. So I'm not sure if they're too much. The Frighteners with Michael J Fox is about ghosts, but it's a comedy and not scary.

David D

Sleepy Hollow (1999) is an October classic

Nathan Swapp

Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement lead

Lamar Smith

Coraline (2009)

Chase

Your cinema background will make you enjoy this one SO much…. Stanislavsky had just released his seminal work on ‘method’ acting and the ‘lead’ in the movie only worked at night and never came out of ‘character.’

Lamar Smith

Alien Aliens The Conjuring

Senec

‘Dracula Unchained,’ perhaps….. ‘Dracula Something’ rings a bell

Lamar Smith

Late Night With the Devil

Mister Lou

Recall the actor who played ‘Bard’ in ‘Hobbit: 5A?’ He leads a cast on the life of the actual Vlad IV with horror/fantasy elements woven in…. Tywin Lannister makes a cameo…. Again, you’ll find it.

Lamar Smith

Monster house (2006) animated horror/comedy

Dio_j

Death Becomes Her could be okay too.

TheEbonyElephant

I’m not sure of the title, but there’s a Malkovich - DaFoe vehicle that supposes that the lead in the iconic German silent picture ‘Nosferatu,’ the first cinematic offering of vampires in World History, might just have been an actual vampire….. you’ll find it….

Lamar Smith

Psycho. I know you said no horror films, but this is an old film, and I'd say very tame by today's standards. I don't think you'd be that scared during it. And it's a classic.

Marcell

Animation: Coraline, Monster House, Paranorman, Corpse Bride Live action: The Conjuring, A Quiet Place, Insidious, Hereditary

Haley Mastronardi

Hocus Pocus is a classic Halloween movie!

Ed Scoglio

Oh, oh, oh, been WAITING on this on, Dearest Jax…. ‘What We Do In The Shadows,’ a mockumentary set in New Zealand showing the difficulties of a flat full of vampires coping with the modern world…. If you liked ‘Zombieland’ and ‘Tucker et al’ you’ll REALLY enjoy this…..

Lamar Smith

A Nightmare Before Christmas might be fun.

TheEbonyElephant

E.T., Ghostbusters or Young Frankenstein

Mike Smith

Scary Movie or Scream would be fun watches

AngelAlCapone

Young Frankenstein and Werewolf By Night
