I’ve been to Japan about 30x. A year ago I saw my first tip jar at the register. Was so shocked I think my jaw dropped. Then at a Marunouchi restaurant I opened the large menu that showed a 2 page spread of the entire staff and workers. Below it: “ We love your tips!” It made me feel guilty that I should tip. But I refrained.
