Sea Otters are the first example of a Keystone Species which I teach to each of my one on one Biology students ! These mammals, and their interactions with the fishing industry of California, are such a perfect example of the concept of the Keystone. When removed, the urchin population exploded and devastated the Kelp. This meant a huge reduction in fish because the Kelp had been the fish nursery. Ultimately, the Sea Otters were returned and the ecosystem began to rebalance itself.
