Summer Island Filming Trip Planned
Added 2018-07-23 16:17:50 +0000 UTCToday I met with the Ogasawara Tourism Office in the city and discussed my upcoming trip. It seems I would need more time to film than just my planned 5 days. The obon tourist season (Mid August) is coming up and the island fills up so it would be harder to get interviews and book diving trips so I will make a side trip in August to shoot another episode and go to Ogasawara in early September. It's also a UNESCO World Heritage site (the whole island) and I need to get some permits for drone shots.
The photos look AMAZING here -- just a 25 hour ferry ride to get there. No flights at all. Despite being way further than Aogashima in the Pacific, the population is much larger! The two main islands are chichijima and hahajima - the latter is less populated and more rugged. Iwojima is also not far from here but there is only one ferry ride a year to see it and that ship sailed 2 weeks ago. (Something for next year!)
I'm sorry this will be a little later than summer but here's the good part -- I will be in the middle of the Pacific and there is 4G LTE! So we get a live Q&A for Patrons only -- on the island!! I'm hoping we get to share a sunset over the Pacific.

Beautiful island with an interesting history from whaling, annexed, ww2, and the little shop that sells out fast when the ship comes in from Tokyo. And it’s under Tokyo jurisdiction too.

I am curious to know why a Local would want to stick with living in an island so far away from the city life in tokyo? Also, what is the recreation like on the island? You've reported on prior videos that each prefecture has their own food speciality. Is there one on the island that you're gong to? Lastly, a 25-hour ferry ride is insane, what is equipped inside a ferry to pass the time away? Are there beds to lie flat and sleep on? Internet? Karaoke? Board games? Thanks again for all that you do to keep us in the know about Japan. Oh, another question is how are the Locals prepared for tsunamis?
