Your help requested! Quick survey on funding independent research

As the year draws to a close, I'm assembling some reflections on being an independent researcher in 2020. One important section centers on patronage as a funding model—and I could use your help to complete it!

Willing to help? Please click here to send me a quick sentence or two about why you're a patron. The form is anonymous.

Your response will help me validate and elaborate some ideas I'm considering in this space. Thank you in advance! 🙇‍♂️

That's kind—thank you, Renee!

I began supporting this Patreon because of my own professional need (adult education past transmission) and personal interest (how we learn, what we retain, and progress in that space - how we identify our knowledge gaps and what we implicitly expect from learning - it all fascinates me.) Having the chance to support the work (and the person doing it) while benefitting from the results is a wonderful way to say thank you.

That's kind—thanks for sharing, Fede. And good luck with Craft!

As I grow as a designer I want to be more oriented towards HCI and Tools for thought. The main problem is that the field has been historically more academic and it takes time to find "leaders" that openly work and share their thoughts. With you, a few years ago I discovered a lot of work from early pioneers, I started taking notes and watching your videos. And I started following your sources of information from Twitter. The way you think, all the things you accomplished and the quality of your work makes me want to be better and inspires me. Patreon makes this possible. And also support your future work so we kinda feel we are somehow helping you focus on the important things. Now, I'm working for a Tool for thought (Craft) and having direct access to messages helped me know what where you thinking, how to improve and you were really kind. I will keep supporting you on Patreon or whatever you decide. Thanks Andy for being an inspiration. Happy holidays!

Thank you for that very kind note, Chris. I swear I wasn't just fishing for compliments with this survey! But they're appreciated anyhow. :)

I think Chris summed it up perfectly: I can't afford to hire you as a one-on-one "knowledge worker coach", so I'm happy to settle for the next best thing.

I debated sharing this anonymously, but I suspect some folks may be in the same boat as me and want to confirm my suspicions: your work is valuable to me because it acts as a lens into how the sausage is made, and acts as a coaching mechanism for my goal of developing transformative tools for thought. I like to think that I now have a little "Andy angel" on my shoulder constantly asking whether or not I'm digging deep enough, or gently reeling me back in if I get stuck in the weeds. Seeing the way that you interact with folks on Twitter and in group sessions has given me a ton of perspective and has revealed weaknesses in my own feedback-elicitation processes, and the Twitch stream that you did of your morning writing/thinking session was an absolute goldmine of techniques for an aspiring writer/independent researcher like myself. You are a fantastic role model for your audience, and the reason I follow your work and subscribe to your Patreon is not simply because I care about spaced repetition, or what you're doing with Orbit specifically, it's because I care about learning how to become a more graceful person in my interactions, and how to become a more effective thinker: the only way I can do that is by following your practice and trying to instill the same habits in myself. I can't afford to hire you as a one-on-one "knowledge worker coach", so I'm happy to settle for the next best thing :)
