I think hit dice are underused as a mechanic, especially one that is so emphasized in the books.  It's the first thing we see in a class section. It's the primary way, I think, that we are meant to get our hp back.  And yet... with long rests basically scrubbing away the hit die mechanic.  I hope that with this episode we can get people thinking about this cool idea more, making items that utilize it more directly and think about making short rests worth while.

Agreed -- unless you go with the Gritty Realism option as Zee suggests, Hit Dice as a mechanic are virtually meaningless IMO.

Yeah this is one of the many (BIG) problems with Fifth Edition, which many of their developer consultants and playtesters alike complained about. None of that feedback was ever enacted though, which is why it feels like there's this massive dangling thread where these dice could have had some real meaning to them built into the system.
