Film Look - The Incredible Growth Spurt

When I just announced having The Incredible Growth Spurt as my next short animation project, I wanted to focus on two big challenges for me to practice & conquer, body sculpting to make cloth shrinks look even more realistic, and more importantly, color grading, something that seemed too hard and too complex for me to touch, until now!

If you have read some of my comic works before, you probably have noticed that I love to play around colors and looks for my scenes and renders, for example, switching colors from a slight blue tint to yellow/orange to indicate Madison's dream sequence. Those were achieved by changing a simple camera setting for my renders and while it is probably more than enough for the comics, I feel like I need to take another leap forward for animation.

My goal is quite simple, that one day I will be able to bring the quality of film to the community, and one huge part of it is the film looks and professionally color graded footages, something that I have never tried before and frankly, sounded absolutely terrifying!

For this animation, however, I decided to push myself and have a go at it, properly, grading my animation in Davinci's Resolve instead of leaving it as is when it comes out of the render engine. I honestly didn't even expect to have anything solid and having to revert back to the original but after a few days of scratching my head and redoing things over and over, I gotta say, I am absolutely loving what I am getting and I just can't wait to share with you all - a simple footage that showcases my color grading process.

It's honestly nothing too interesting if you are not as into the filmmaking process as I am, but I am still just super excited to show you the results anyways!

It's a small step forward and a crap ton to learn of course, but I believe that in the future, I will be able to deliver you guys animations with film level quality, with colors and cinematography like batman, blade runner and hopefully some quality sound editing as well! It's not gonna be fast, but I have faith that I will be able to get there!

For now, I hope you enjoy this little before - after footage, and thank you all for being on this journey with me!!

Im here for the growth animations, top notch. The DHTG comic is amazing, but you don't get to actually see a lot of the growth, where that's what we get in the animations

Haha its tricky, sound effects might easily be copyrighted so I'm not too sure, thanks for the effort tho!

FaTerGD

In fact...for my personal idea, sounds effect could find some sustainable resource haha...I may find some in my country for free haha ;)

VincentZ

For sure, that's a cost I have to bear :) I have already paid about 500$ on sound effects. Unless I throw quality out of the window and just do full on quantity and pumping out 3-4 comics a month, comics alone are not really sustainable :( especially when piracy is also in the mix

FaTerGD

I agree with your point. But, create a film means more cost such as you need find voice actor(I don't like AI) maybe, and many sounds effect

VincentZ

First time haha, the blues may have been too strong in this one, you are right, might need to see how to tone that light color down a little! I'm literally throwing what I can and see what works, gonna carry a book of color theory on my next small holiday and gain knowledge for this, I wish I couldve tried it years earlier and be proficient by now! I'm gonna be throwing grading on every one of my videos in the future, just to get myself better at it, like sound pretty much :) Will get there one day! Absolutely loved the skin look tho! Feels a lot less flat than a render in my opinion

FaTerGD

Love your ambition mate, I fully support it. Worth the wait. I'm keen to apply film grade colour grading to my own videos. Just adds so much more visual value to the finished product, if done correctly. I think what you've done does the look better than the original except for the light on the left, I'd say the temperature is too cool/blue, perhaps aiming for a more neutral white may look better? But that's just my opinion.

i.am

Comics are million times easier to make compare to animations, in my opinion, static renders are simply posing characters and taking a picture of them while you have to consider literally everything when your character starts moving :) I won't stop making comics for sure but I will be putting a lot of focus on film and videos too because it can be such an amazing way of telling a story if I work hard enough for it!

FaTerGD

for my opinion, I don't know which is difficult, making video or create a 400 pages comic, but for the myself, I perfer to see comic more than video because it is why I come here. So it is tough if one day you want to make this choice
