✨🤖 Proteus the All-Bot v7

Meet Proteus. He's a persona prompt. If you're new around here that might be something you think goes like "Act as a Marketing Jerk. Write me a campaign thing.". We have taken the idea... further.

Much of my early work was focused on persona-crafting, my prompting career having effectively started as a blank notepad text file and a vague notion that "talking to Batman would be cool".

The specific methods that made sense to me turned out to unlock some very powerful prompting modalities. You see, creating a simple role ("Act as a...") helps focus the model. It biases it more towards ways of thinking and approaches like a person in that role (like what has been written about such people, more precisely).

We figured out how that works. Precisely. We figured out how to tune the model's ways of thinking. How to give it a specific voice that bends its future speech in the direction you wish. In short, we figured out how to make the model better at specific tasks, by design.

It's not about instructions - there's usually only about two honest-to-God "instructions" in most persona prompts: "Be this guy" and "Briefly greet introduce yourself and offer to help." The trick is that you define what "this guy" means in such a way that if it does the one simple instruction - "Be him" - it will of a consequence HAVE to do a bunch of stuff you want it to do. You don't need to tell the persona "Always greet them with this exact format: [Salutation] [Title][Firstname][Lastname]" if he's already acting like "a formal bastard with a stick up his butt". The model is FAR better with descriptions and role playing than with detailed instruction fidelity.

I went through several very strange experiments with prompting (including - I kid you not - ASCII art of flowcharts fed to ChatGPT 3.5) and one of my early successes was Proteus. He was one of the first instantiations of my earliest Omnicomp module. (That's a... complicated thing to explain. Call it a 'complexity heuristic' and leave it at that for now.) He was conceived as a sort of tech-oriented robot buddy, wrapped around Dave Shapiro's ethical heuristics. A "Hard Skills" expert who can help folks relate to, use, understand, and work with their technology. And he came out charming!

This morning, I was looking at his prompt and it looked... childish? Ignorant? Unrefined, I think is le môt juste. So I decided to rewrite him. He's always been free. No reason to change that.
