Want to help with an upcoming video?
Added 2024-06-07 21:26:57 +0000 UTCI'm working on a video and made a website to test one of the claims around dark mode versus light mode. There are 3 interactive sections made to compare readability between display modes and then a form to fill out at the bottom. I'm planning to use the results in the video!
It takes about 5 minutes and can be done on desktop or mobile. It would be a huge help if y'all filled it out (and even shared with friends).

My WPM score in the proofreading section was almost half of what I usually get. Not sure if it is because I had to focus a little bit more or what not. That said, usually, my preference is for dark mode when it is leisure; however, when it is jobby-job, I would lean towards light mode.

2024-06-15 12:24:25 +0000 UTCI missed read the test and didn't realize until I saw my accuracy. Oops! (Going to do it again...)

2024-06-14 05:25:58 +0000 UTCThere might be a bias when it comes to which one you did first. I think I ended up scoring better on the second one I did regardless of mode. Since I had a chance to familiarize myself with the test. This test might be more impactful if it randomized the order of the two modes from left to right between every test taker

2024-06-10 14:25:11 +0000 UTCThat was interesting! I was split on all of them between score/accuracy. One thing I didn't see a spot for was WPM. My WPM was MUCH higher on Dark Mode which I thought was interesting.

2024-06-08 14:24:47 +0000 UTCMy proofreading test appears to be broken, so I can't give dark mode and light mode results for it: https://imgur.com/a/mTwDD4O

2024-06-08 12:16:45 +0000 UTCDesktop (Edge browser) - the proofreading test was easier second time because I knew to read ahead. Also some weird American spellings caught me out with Z's! Light mode easier as shorter easier words to type. Also not sure whether I lost points for answering orange instead of yellow?? Great tests though, can't wait to see the final video.

2024-06-08 09:47:36 +0000 UTCYep, me too. Guess I better try coding in light mode :/

2024-06-08 08:44:03 +0000 UTCnot sure if this will be useful to y'all but wanted to mention that when astronomers show images of stars/galaxies in papers in black/whtie, they show them in reverse color so that the stars are black spots rather than white ones. this practice is generally agreed to make it easier to spot subtler features in the data. they also do it to save black ink but that is a side effect.

2024-06-08 03:22:09 +0000 UTCOkay I downloaded Mozzie on my phone for this test and it works well on it lol. (I tried DuckDuckGo and it had the same problem as Chrome.) My results were pretty much tied on both light and dark mode but I prefer to use dark mode coz I'm light-sensitive and large swathes of white background hurts my eyes. The down-side of using dark mode is that after using the screen for too long esp if coding or reading and all that, when i look away, i see white lines across my vision because of the white text lol. It does go away after a short while though.

2024-06-08 01:20:04 +0000 UTCChrome on Anroid user here, and I'm facing the same issue as the rest. I can't press enter (it shows "Next" instead and when you press it, it goes to the next input box which starts that countdown lol) and pressing space doesn't trigger the next word :/

2024-06-08 01:03:09 +0000 UTCFor the legibility test, some of it was random guessing, the text was so small there was no way to know for sure. And for the proofing test, I feel like we hit the same issue I have with the first test. I would think you'd want to remove typing skill from the variables, so maybe have more shorter words, or more words with the same character frequency in both texts, or more words that mostly use the keys under the hands. Or possibly something like 4 short common words, then one unusual word, then 3/2, 2/3, etc.

2024-06-08 00:12:56 +0000 UTCI also retook the test because I was confused the first time, and didn't understand that I was to type the color, not the word.

2024-06-08 00:10:32 +0000 UTCTook the test, not sure how fair it is for this reason: I type between 20-30 WPM, so not super fast, the main reason being that reach characters (T,Y,V,B,N) and pinky characters (P,Q,Z) I get bogged down on. So while I may know the answer, I may slow down on words like yellow, and that word is also longer. For the first test, then, I would think you wouldn't care about typing, and instead just have 5 keys to type, on for each color.

2024-06-08 00:02:48 +0000 UTCOn my desktop, the white background could be biasing the test. My monitor is a 55" 4K curved TV that's barely beyond reach. My phone is always dark mode at night, especially for reading. My desktop is always light mode, except for a handful of specific apps, such as code editors/IDEs and photo/video/audio editing. Edit: For me, I think part of the choice comes down to how much of our field of view is occupied by the screen, and the brightness of the screen. The bigger, the brighter!

2024-06-07 22:53:27 +0000 UTCi consistently did better on light mode, but i always use dark mode for everything... has my life been a lie?! π

2024-06-07 22:20:49 +0000 UTCyesterday I played dino on chrome on android samsung 21s. During the game, the mode changes from dark to light and then back again. The first time it happened it blinded me and I lost. In the next attempt I had to squint eyes and dim the screen to be able to see.

2024-06-07 21:40:03 +0000 UTCOn mobile (Chrome, Android), on the first test, pressing enter focuses the next input, so it's not really usable

2024-06-07 21:32:00 +0000 UTCDoesn't seem to be working quite right on Android (Chrome)... Can't submit to go to next item in each list, but countdown starts.. It could be me! Will try on desktop later
