Congrats on the successful medical treatment and all of the luck moving forward!

This episode was written for me! I've been so upset with my slow decline in reading over the last four years - I read over 200 books in 2020, then 141 in 2021, 73 in 2022, only 18 last year and NONE so far this year! I've got over 300 unread books (and I keep. buying. more.). But I literally just got out of hospital last week after getting a lumbar puncture that FINALLY got me a diagnosis of intracranial hypertension! Guess that explains the memory and concentration issues as well as the jiggly vision (ugh I hate looking at words at the moment). They drained my excess brain juice and I COULD READ! Just a shame that the brain juice re-accumulates so fast. So I just aspirationally bought 50 bookmarks because soon a literal brain surgeon (I hope!) is going to burrow a tube into my brain to drain my excess brain juice down my jugular vein and into my heart, and I'll finally be able to read some gosh dang books. Because that's the most important part, obviously!

i find the problem is way worse on my kindle my bookcase at home isn’t toooo bad, as it’s not huge - i have to make room for any new purchases but my kindle is full of books, humble bundles, uni textbooks, amazon deals 😭😭 i reckon i’ve read like 5% of them honestly it’s dreadful

Curses, missed the bookmarks! (Is this something that might restock? Maybe the next time you release a book video?) Last week I read a book a day because I happened to discover a series as I was leaving the library. I kind of know the perfect combo for me (platonic friendships, fantasy/scifi, lite or no romance). So, I'm curious, what buzzwords/vibes you have found work for you on BookTok? What catches your attention as you walk by in an actual bookstore or library? (I have ADHD and I'm afraid of TikTok destroying my life by distracting me forever. I'm looking forward to the newsletter!) My problem with buying books is when books are on sale. There was like a year when if you bought 2 graphic novels (DC or Marvel) you got one free, which made all three like $7 or $8 and that was such a great deal that now most of my unread books are graphic novels. I like bookstore and library vibes. (And Libby is one of my fav things.) I've seen the black dots on books before! Glad to know what they mean!

i know that feel (nervously glances at steam library) regarding the bookmarks thing, i actually find myself using the steam notes overlay for similar purposes, like writing down my thoughts about the game, how it plays or how the story goes maybe kinda off-topic question(?): do yall read webcomics? (probably skipping over the aspects of differences between producing and publishing graphic novels and word novels)

I mostly borrow audiobooks and rarely am I allowed to renew those. It's read it or lose it!

How do you stop yourself from aspirational borrowing?!?

How satisfying was it to initially not be sure if you would sell all of your bookmarks to being sold-out in less than 24 hours?

Being a Patron makes watching your videos even more fun for many reasons, but today I discovered that whenever there is animation in the video, I start guessing which frame might be a desktop background, hopefully. :D Loved this video! ❀️

Thoroughly enjoyed the video. What are your thoughts about how powerful TikTok appears to be when it comes to influencing media consumption? Also, no shame in dog-earing your own books. Heathen, and proud of it.

Lloyd

Do audiobooks and ebooks have the same trends that you discussed in the video, and how do they factor in when it comes to publishing? I assume digital copies are lower cost, but I will not be surprised if the physical and digital share the same graphs. Also who eats the cost of all those returned books? That wearhouse was unsettling to see.

Great video Sabrina, I've always found the idea of TikTok, the most fast-paced entertainment media we have being so linked with books which arguably feels like a complete opposite. My enjoyment about physical books comes from the joy of looking at a library and remembering who I was when I read those books, kind of like a photo album, what do you find the most appealing about physical books over digital?

Pablo Rodriguez

Hi! Two questions: 1. Why are you attacking me personally with this video, and 2. As people who do a lot of research for a living, do you feel pressure to read non-fiction more than fiction?

Erik Edin

Interesting, my takeaway from your research was that you're leveraging Booktok's crowdsourcing and promise of emotional fulfillment with books to achieve larger completion percentage, the risk is way lower then cover perusal at a bookstore/retailer. I also think, similar to what you described, my childhood reading habits were also with the promise and expectation of emotional fulfillment, especially with fictional/SF/Fantasy books, the excitement and draw of exploring and experiencing fantastical scenarios was delightful. As I grew older, I become more familiar with the inconsistencies and lack of plausibility, as I had a better understanding of systems and my experience flavored my impression on what was plausible, and those stories, or similar ones, became less fulfilling. Non-fiction books have a similar bar, providing some sort of utility or edification, and as I read more, those same level of fulfillment deceased as I continued to do my own risky perusal, opposed to leveraging the recommendations of folks that have already sifted through and had an emotional connection with the material enough to recommend it. I say all that to say, great video, thank you.

An interesting presentation, and though I've known this about the physical publishing industry and economies of scale I was pleased to see an easily accessible presentation for a wider audience. Now we just need to wait for the bookmarks to be back in stock.

Bryce Carlson

I was a little disappointed that libraries were not discussed as a fantastic solution. I'm a reformed over-buyer myselfβ€”I was buying books more quickly than I could finish themβ€”but now that I use the library and borrow a lot of books in audio format, my shelf of bought-but-unread books is steadily shrinking. I still buy books, but only ones I really care about owning rather than everything I want to read.
