I thought the reason Japan had all this cool phone internet stuff though was because it was all proprietary services ran by the carriers, which is also why it didn´t work anywhere else because it was a quirk of how the phone market over there was put together. One Dutch provider actually tried (it was called i-Mode) but it was so limited that it wasn´t worth the premium to most people.
