Schedule Update

You might have noticed there’s no schedule listed for the next chapter release. Sorry about that, but it means what you think it means. Hiatus.

For how long? Sorry again, but I don’t know. It might just be an extra week, with an erratic schedule thereafter, or it might be longer.

The truth is, I’ve been struggling for a while now, even since I dropped down to three chapters a month. That helped a bit, but it didn’t help enough, and with all the focus I split between this and my day job, there’s not much left for anything else. On my off weekends, I find myself picking between staying home to chase the seemingly unattainable dream of a backlog and actually using the time to relax and see friends and family. That’s not great.

I don’t want to be long-winded here, so I’ll just say that there are other areas of my life that need work. Having the constant, looming dread of the deadline hanging over me is damaging both my mental and physical health. I don’t want to stop writing, but I think I need to, at least for a little while.

I hope you understand, and as always, thank you for reading. Your support means so much.

Haha, no worries. It shouldn't block you, and it's certainly not a ban. The only warning Patreon had on the refund button was about annual subscriptions, which I don't have enabled.

SenescentSoul

Wait that doesn't block me does it? The only time I've gotten authors to refund me on patreon also came with me being banned from their stories

Gardor

I'm $2.50 richer, my next soda pop goes out to you!

Gardor

Sorry for being a fair weather fan, I know my support specifically meant a lot to you. I'll be back in however many months.

Gardor

Reposting answer from when this was asked in Discord: Patreon's options for [pausing billing] are very limited. The only option is one month pause, with no option to unpause or auto-repause. I don’t need the additional psychological hit of clicking a button that is like admitting “well, there goes another month”. It also doesn’t allow those who want to continue supporting me through the hiatus to do so, and since I've got the setting enabled that lets people be billed on different days, it could lead to some folks getting unevenly billed. They way it is now sucks, but it sucks for everyone equally. If people don’t feel I’m holding up my end of the deal, they SHOULD cancel.

SenescentSoul

Wait did you pause patreon charging us?

Some_Jawa

Same, been checking every week. No word as of yet! 🙏 and so we remain

Marwolaeth

So any chance of a chapter soon, this is the normal time they come out which made me think of it

mallix

I still eagerly await your return, SS

Marwolaeth

According to legend when your clarity goes high enough, you stop running away from the universe.

Err

During your break, I decided to reread the story. I continue to be impressed with your storytelling. Your world has depth and breadth; the references and whispers are amazing. Hope you are doing well.

Bryan D

Wish we could afford to outbid day-job-boss for first dibs on your time. Never going to be anything but supportive of you taking care of yourself, whatever that looks like. Thanks for an incredible story to date. Can't speak for anyone else, but I'm not going anywhere.

Joy

Take all the time you need. In the end, your life, wellbeing the people around you are more important than any story.

Simon Andriessen

Ultimately, I hope most of us who are on Patreon value you and care about your wellbeing. I have had so much joy from Delve, and it has made my life positively better. I've had chapters send my mind fizzing with ideas, I've spent many a week anticipating the next chapter... And far too long theorycrafting. No matter what happens, thank you so much for Delve.

Monomatopoeia

When my friends and I started hanging out, gaming, etcetera, we all agreed on Rule 0. Family first. No questions, no arguements. That includes you. Your health and wellbeing effect your family, even those beyond spouse/children. So. Family First.

Xultanis

I hope you get better mate. I have personally been recovering from But out for the past month, it's a really hard thing. It was described best to me as continuously emptying yourself, without taking time to refill. Do what refills you, find what brings you joy and do that.

Signspace

Take care of yourself and find a way to handle writing so that it’s a net positive in your life. You’ve kept this up for a lot of years, and it’s not strange that the pace that it needs adjusting to fit, as it’s not your main job. That being said, keep it fair to patrons as well and communicate in advance. Also consider changing to charge per chapter if you need more time per chapter. It seems to work well for the author of mother of learning/zenith of sorcery, but needs a lager chapter size.

Chymor

Damn sad af. Take car of urself fam. Without you there is no more delve

ricky jackson

Aww man sad to hear that, but do what you need to do! I hope your break improves your mental health and you can come back stronger than ever!

JoshCalmick

Really sad to hear that, your story is amazing but your life and mental health come first! Take care of yourself :)

CentaureHeart

If a schedule is stressing you out, then don't schedule it! We all love your work enough to wait for you, so go de-stress for a while and come back when you feel ready to write. Your health is important so take care of yourself before you take care of your story.

Sean Quinn

It’s for sure more important to take care of yourself if this hobby has become a source of stress greater than it is a source of enjoyment for you. The only thing I’d ask is that if you think you’ll step away for a long time or maybe forever, maybe see if you can write one more chapter that works as a either the start of a time slip or a soft ending. You’re 90% there anyway with Rain having a city of his own and maybe when/if you feel the urge to start writing again you’ll have the creative space to do what ever you want just by starting with the words “10 years later…”

James

A quick thanks for writing this story. It's been really enjoyable. Today's chapter was a solid banger.

SecretsOfTheVoid

CasualFarmer technically goes on a month long hiatus every so often and pauses his patreon while not uploading. Therefore it's nothing new for me.

St Chef

Noooooooo ! Oh well :P IRL and Yourself is first priority anyway (don't forget that), so even if it hurt me to hear that, that's fine :) (not like plenty of others story don't get 1 good chapter a month or etc, followed you for years and alway good quality, totally fine by me if you want to drop what stress you and go at it more relaxed and without schedule)

Zarik0

*shrug* If you dont have time you dont have time. If you want to still write keep writing and just adapt to your own time management. And if you are worried about the people following you for years needing a fixed release schedule... i dont know, do a 1 release per month thing? Maybe longer? Other stories did it, why cant you? Wish you all the best. :)

D

RIP, but may you wake up again.

Enkelados

C'est la vie. If you need a break, then you need a break. Forcing yourself to write when it's only making things worse will only lead to a spiral and poor writing. Nobody wins in that scenario.

Ziggy

Take all the time you need. Mental health matters and if you drop the story thats fine to :)

Mikkel Poulsen

if you come back in a year we will still be here (unless the world goes under)

Shukketsu

Nice! My first thought when I saw the title "Schedule Update", before even reading it, was: "Finally! SenescentSoul can stop stressing now." Reading this actually gives me a lot of hope for the future. I especially love that you did not put any dates in. Even the existence of a deadline puts pressure on people. Managing expectations are key. I've been reading since before Ascension's founding and am glad to support you. Your RR description of the story really hooked me when I started. I love the fact that numbers have actually meaning and how even simple spells can change how jobs are done. I was really mad at the people trying to push their wants on you and unjustly letting out their feeling in the story reviews when they didn't get their ways. I hope you not only recover, but feel better than ever. :)

WannaBeATree

No worries Senescent. I’ve enjoyed your writing, but nothing should come at the expense of your wellbeing. I wish you well and will be happy to enjoy whatever work you do or don’t share going forward. Be well, and thank you for all the pretty words. ❤️

Dee

😱 You are my favorite author. Even the heavy hitters on royalroad rarely reach your quality. I always hoped you'd reach their level of income and be able to focus on writing. Now I hope you can regain your motivation 😭

Ceres Kantir

Best of luck to you, SS. I hope a breather does you good. It's not a good feeling when a passion turns into a burden. Hope the break will help it feel more like a passion again :)

Kahandran

Take care of yourself, we'll be fine. Thanks as always!

Doodlyboy15

Take all the time you need!

John Bierce

welp I stockpiled a lot of chapters, hopefully you manage to get back to writing the amazing story while leading an enjoyable life

Tomer Yud

You do you. I always say mental health is a priority and to be honest the online serial schedual is punishing. You have an amazing story and if it takes you a while to find your muse then that's just fine. I'll read what ever you write, whenever you feel like writing. So enjoy your break. I'm wishing you the best. And perhaps some time in the future I'll get the opertunity to read more of your awesome stories.

Callum Rhodes

Sorry to hear that. I hope your balance is easy to find

Alexander Dupree

I really look forward to your chapters when they come out, but more than anything I dont want them to stop forever so take all the time you need.

mallix

Take all the time you need, it's important to take care of yourself.

Andrew

Look man, I have novels that haven't updated in sometimes a year that I follow with anticipation. You're good. We all know this is more of a hobby for you. Take all the time you need whether that be a week or the rest of your life. Your mental health comes first.

Kendelle Trotter

Take a break if you need it, SS! We’ll be here. Your own health comes first, and I much rather you take a break than burn out entirely - this is an amazing story and I cannot imagine the legwork that goes into the system to get it right. See you then! Get better!
