Announcement

It’s bad news, unfortunately.

Going forward, I’m dropping the update schedule to a 3-weeks-on/1-week-off pattern, with the first break being the week after next.

Feb 13: C190 (today)
Feb 20: C191
Feb 27: Break
Mar 06: C192
Mar 13: C193
Mar 20: C194
Mar 27: Break
etc.

With how complex the story has become, it has been taking me, on average, twenty hours of effort to complete each chapter. Twenty hours of work a week doesn’t sound so bad on its own, but unfortunately, my nine-to-five is still being a massive pain at the moment. Rather than calming down over the holidays, it looks like things there are going to get even busier in the near future. Adding twenty hours of writing on top of a forty-plus-hour garbage fire doesn’t leave much time or energy for taking care of myself.

And so, this new schedule. I figure that a regular pattern will work better than just announcing breaks every time I’m on the verge of total burnout like before. I still love writing this story, and I don’t want to stop, but I also don’t want to go without weekends for months on end, eating up my limited stock of vacation days just to stay afloat. That’s obviously not a viable long-term strategy. I know some of you will be disappointed by this change, but I sincerely believe the story will be better for it.

As always, thank you all again for your support and understanding. I would have never made it this far without you.

You do you man, just happy to be on the ride!

Ahmed Halat

But he only charges $2.50? Which is about 1/4th your $10 example?

Unfortunate timing, at the end of this month I won't have access to this for two years because I'm serving a mission for the church of Jesus christ of latter day saints. So I'll have to un sub but it's not because of the schedule change and I'll be binging this thing when I get back

Gintore

I'm sorry but I'm dropping my subscription. Many authors that I pay 10 dollars too put out more the 4x the content. Now you are dropping lower then that. I can't in good faith support that with my money.

JF

Get your rest. Better to have good and regular content, than to have sporadic, unreliable content that may or may not be up to par. Don't sacrifice your art and hobby for the sake of pride.

Sustainability is *the* most important thing when working on something long-term like Delve. We’d all rather see you complete this at a slower, healthier pace than see you burn out.

BagFullOfLizards

Please take breaks whenever needed!! Your health is more important!

Do whatever you need to do, nobody here knows your life and needs better than you.

I always imagine authors are telling a story at a campfire. The only way the story's going to be good is if they're well fed, have all their ducks in a row, and are actively trying to tell the story. Mental stability leads to actual good characters so I for one am okay with breaks.

The Game of Thrones books didn't hook me nearly as much as the show. I can live without him finishing. Now Rothfuss' writer's block pains me. With how marvelous his prose is, I am absolutely waiting on the next book.

Ziggy

Better you do this, this is a marathon not a run so better to take in the best rythm possible for you, and i totally understand you can prefer to keep a stable work and not go full writter, seem you writting this story is more as a hobby or a little plus to do beside your "main" life, and i can agree to that and respect it Chapter will still come and at the same quality, slow or fast is a bonus, the important thing is its sustenable for you so it dont stop for burn out or wathever reason so i have no problem with all that, im more with the mindset "good" at this new And like another say in comment its strange but im used to it now, the "slow" release and pace of this story and in the end i feel its quite nice and dont think about it to have more

Zarik0

Take care of yourself :)

CentaureHeart

This makes me sad, but better this than you burning out and the story becoming mediocre or going on hiatus. I will never stop being salty about George Martin and Patrick Rothfuss and their legendary writer's block.

Cirvante

Aaand, the're all falling, one by one. Sad to see most of my favorite authors being negatively impacted by mental health, but I fully understand and I hope that this will allow you to feel better! Mental health is critical and it's time that us as a society started treating it as such. BTW, IIRC you were working in IT, right? If you need any assistance or suggestions for automating your workload and thus decreasing the weight of it on your mind don't hesitate to ask, i've helped quite a few companies with that.

Andrei

Do what you need to do bro....have you thought about what it would take to do this full time? Maybe make that a Patreon goal if it's something you think about!

kyle

Take as long as you need man, it's always best to write at a comfortable pace

wiggster

I have a hard time holding myself back on new chapters but there's also something annoying about the ~daily anticipation in higher throughput stories so slow schedule is nice in its own way, as weird as it may sound.

Err

I don't mind, but could you include in every chapter post if the next one will be a break?

MortederTod

i just read your announcement in royal road... and since i am finally out of university and got some income of my own, here i am adding to the support on your patreon. Wish you all the best. And as a reader hope you get so wildly popular that patreon would relieve you from a forty plus hour garbage fire so that you could focus more on writing in peace

Aaron

Take care of yourself, dude. It doesn't do anyone any good if you get burned out. I would ask that you try not to leave us on cliffhangers before the break week?

Jon

Habe you considered not working full time or changing workplace? After all Patreon adds a considerable buffer to your income.

Enkelados

As much as I would like to read up until chapter 1191 tomorrow, I suppose you need to do what you need to do.

belloch

Do whatever you can to keep that love for writing this story strong take a month if need be. Stay healthy mate.

Biblion

Sounds good. Hope things get better.

Space253

dang i get so hype about next chapters that I forget how much effort goes into the work. 20 hrs a week??? wow, yeah, you take your week off brother, you earned it

nugitoBambino

Oof. I'm going to get the shakes at this rate from not getting my fix. But I'd rather take 3 chapters of your best, than 4 of lesser quality. With you also slowly getting burnt out until you run away forever while gibbering about numbers.

Ziggy

I'd certainly prefer if you were writing full time, and I'd be happy to up my support to help with that, but of course you should do what you need to to stay healthy.

am

As much as its gonna annoy me, its preferable to you burning out or quality dropping out of rush, stay strong.

Veritas Dolor

He's said he prefers the stability of his current job to the idea of writing full time. So Patreon numbers shouldn't change anything as things stand.

Gregb

It's good to see you're looking out for yourself. Having an audience can be stressful, so being able to make decisions like this is important.

Gregb

I approve. As a reader it sucks, but knowing when to take breaks to avoid burnout is more important. Enjoy your rest because i hope to have many more good chapters

Grey Kylia

Das fair, put yourself first chief.

Saltysaurus Nom

I'm a little sad but I'd rather you have your health and good work/life balance than see you wreck yourself, possibly your job that culminates in a downward spiral where we never get an adequate ending.

Doodlyboy15

How many more patrons do you need before writing full time is a viable consideration?
