My best attempt at composing “horror ambience” in Pico-8 in about 20mins. Thanks to Grzegorz Dalek for the tutorial request!
(btw, I really like the idea of patrons sending me their music ideas/sketches and me showing ways you can expanding on them. Send me your carts! Would you prefer a video tutorial on something like this? Or how about a bi-weekly/monthly stream?)

One idea for composing “horror” music is to use unconventional sounds to create form and tension, rather than relying solely on traditional melodies and harmony. So, in this tutorial I use Pico-8’s instrument editor to get strange buzzing sounds and unusual melodic instruments.
For me, one of the main characteristics of ambient music is the feeling of randomness. So I’m placing certain effects randomly throughout some SFX and am listening closely to make sure looped patterns don’t SOUND like they’re looped.
