Wong Fu and the Oscars

(yeah that's a prop)

This morning I woke up with a lot of thoughts about last night's Oscar ceremony. I tend to do this every year after these big award shows. I think it's because always take these as a reminder of how Asians are doing in mainstream media.. and let's be honest, judging by the nominees and presence on the red carpet, we've still got a LONG way to go. I laid it all out in a twitter thread today so take a look if you're curious about my viewpoints.

I know it sounds a little "ranty" or bleak.. but the reason why I wanted to share it here with our Careholders is because I wanted to say "Thank you." Thank you because through Wong Fu Forward we're doing our part to take those first steps toward building a new system. We're able to take risks and chances on some new ideas and bigger projects that others won't. We're able to reach out to other creators and future talent. We're able to do all the things we wish would happen, but instead of waiting, we're taking control of our own path. And your contribution is helping us do so.

Everyone plays an important part in our progress as a community. We need creators AND consumers! That means watching shows, going to theaters, subscribing to channels, and yes, supporting Patreons! Voting with your dollar because it's the only way to show that anyone actually cares about what we make! And y'all are truly living up to your name ;)

Anyway, many Asians still want to live in the US. My female friend once worked at ManuLife in Cambodia, and went there working at nail salon. But life was changed, she earned much money than her previous work here and found her love one and got married. She said it may be late for her to start new life in the US, but it will be good for her next generation. The thing is in America you can follow your dream. In most Asia country especially the developing country like Cambodia, you can't follow what you love because what you love your parents may think it's not good for your future and sometimes, what you love, you can't afford to study it or pursue it. For example, I used to dream to be a film maker. Since 2005, when I have computer for the first time, I like taking video by phone, editing it like a MV and film-like. But after graduated high school in 2007, I can't afford to study film. There was only one film school at that time (or maybe now too), Limkokwing from Malaysia. My parents can't afford to pay the school fee. I got a full scholarship from the government to study Civil Engineering which people think it's great for future in here. I ended up being a Quantity Surveyor now. Anyway, I still love film and sometimes make short video too. I keep watching Nigahiga and Wongfu's new video. Maybe I'm out of topic. Anyway, if Oscars don't give award to Asian America, can you find any Asia Awards in Asia?

:D
