Voices of Spring (Frühlingsstimmen)

I thought it would be very interesting to do an acoustic guitar cover of Johann Strauss’s well-known masterpiece “Voices of Spring” (Fruhlingsstimmen), Op.410, written in 1882. The cheerful melodies in this waltz were intended to celebrate the joys of spring - the composition itself was at the time a must have in popular classical orchestral repertoires.

This is a faster tempo waltz. I chose a 200 bpm for most of the song with some exceptions at points where the tempo momentarily slows so the song can breathe.

There are several parts in different keys. The main section which opens and closes the composition is in the key of Bb major. And other parts, which are in the keys Eb major, Ab major and C minor (Eb major), are often introduced by a small bridge. With all these changes Strauss effectively expressed many different moods.

It is not technically difficult to play this cover. I did mark out the picking at certain points (bar 49 and 51) where I found sweep picking to be the best solution. This is a thread of 5 notes starting on the third string with an upstroke and then followed by 4 notes with a downstroke (from 4th to the 1st string).
