New Song & Video: Souvenirs

OH BOY.

All morning it's felt like I am on one side of a very large wall and on the other side is me sharing this song with you. I think the mental barrier comes from it holding so much meaning to me on so many levels that 1. I have no idea how to coherently talk about it yet and 2. even if I did, I would be afraid I would not do an adequate job of expressing all these things to you.

So today I'm going to let the song and video speak for themselves.

That said, I do want to give you some context for the song.

"Souvenirs" is a reflection on the time I spent in Jakarta, the feelings I felt, the lessons I learned, and what it was like coming home and trying to figure out how to resume normal life again. (If you haven't read about my 100 days in Jakarta yet, now would be a great time to get the backstory: http://kinagrannis.com/jakarta )

I have about 80 billion other things I'd like to share about this song and video, so I'll be doling them out in little nuggets throughout the next couple weeks.

As always, I would love more than anything to hear from you in the comments below about your experience with the song and video. What it means to you, what you think it means, questions, etc. Feel free to listen a couple times and let it marinate first :)

Thanks for listening, thanks for your patience, for your love, and for allowing this song to be shared with the world. Sending out so much love to you all today. Thank you KG Records. <3

"Souvenirs" Lyrics

Four little walls and we made a home

Out of the window the gray unknown

Who would've thought we would wind up here

Holed up and holding it all so dear

And it's time that we take care of things, my dear

If it's all or nothing, cut the cloth, I'm fine here

Oh, how the days seem to disappear

Now all the scars seem like souvenirs

I saw the universe in your eyes

Telling me it's gonna be alright

And it's time that we take care of things, my dear

If it's all or nothing, cut the cloth, I'm fine here

And it's time that we take care of things, my dear

I'm having trouble loading the link that explains the background of the song. I love the story--could you please fix the link?

The lyrics are so beautiful!!! It's a classic original song and it can relate to alot of us. I'm still a fan of your music. Thank you for sharing a beautiful song.

So beautiful song

I'm having a coffee in my cabin on the island. It's foggy today, I cannot see the mainland. Occasionally a large boat motors by on its journey. The ocean is calm in this bay. Birds are hoping for fish. I listen to this latest song. Making a home, wondering how each new event, no matter how small, will meld with the rest of my life. When I return to the mainland I realize now that there is always a moment when I feel I don't belong. I let it pass by and it becomes part of the collective of feelings that come to the surface and recede, like a tide, constantly bringing into question being and belonging. Think I better have another coffee.

The song is, as mentioned above, beautifully haunting. And the video was quite well done - skillfully shot, difficult yet seamless transitions, telling/fit with the story perfectly. The others have perhaps said it better, but I'm impressed with the technical aspects of this creation and also personally grateful that you've made it. <3

Kina, The story on your Jakarta experience had a profound impact on me since the first time I read it. But now, this video and song takes it even further. I’ve connected it to a time in my life that was confusing and hard and I wasn’t sure how I’d gotten to that point or what the future then held for me. This song managed to bring a sort of fondness to those memories. Now that I know I made it through, that everything IS ok. “Now all the scars seem like souvenirs.” It’s a beautiful song. I’m so impressed with the depths of your words and how everyone can relate to them even when our situations are all so very different. ❤️

One word: beautiful One emoji: 🦄

My head had to empty out the song before I could have space for the video. Cutting between now and then is simply stunning, marvelously affective. We know even in the darkest times you create light, we know it. But to see it happening, to see you creating when there was no way to know when or if you'd be able to use that footage... and if that wasn't enough, to see you reliving it down to the shape of your body. Marvelous! There's such a connection in the videos where you face the camera. Even when you don't look, something about your face is so open and expressive, the emotions flow in a straight line. These videos where you don't are open in a different way. Who is Kina Grannis when she's no longer youtube.com/kinagrannis, when she's just Kina Grannis? She is amazing, and so much more.
