RUN BTS EP. 22 (REACTION) - IT'S A CHUSEOK CELEBRATION!

re: the slam/flipping game this game is called "ddakji" (also sometimes seen romanized as "ttakji") and is a Pog-style game, as you could tell. obviously, though, the cards are pretty big and there is no devoted "slammer" piece; all pieces are the same kind of folded paper tile. personally I love watching this game, although sadly our BTS boys are really bad at it, so they struggled to finish it up LOL. I first became familiar with ddakji via the Korean game show Running Man, and it's always amazing to watch there... the MC of Running Man (and one of South Korea's most beloved MCs), Yoo Jaesuk, is one of the most skilled ddakji players you'll ever see. that man can flip even the most stubborn tile like it's magic! I think watching him doing has given me an appreciation for how much skill can go into that game. PS: your pronunciation of "chuseok" was PERFECT! Nico, you are really doing great with your Korean pronunciation ♥

Every time I watch a run BTS, or Bon Voyage, Soop episode, I end up cooking coz them boys spend their time eating and make me hungry! 🍜🍙🍤

- hangawi = Chuseok = harvest festival = Korean thanksgiving - everyone dresses up in Korean traditional dress (hanbok), play traditional games, eat traditional foods - hanbok is pronounced Han (Solo) + bok (rhymes with Coke, though the "o" sound isn't as long) - songpyeon - rice cakes traditionally filled with toasted sesame seeds and honey and eaten on special occasions and festivals - you take "dough" made of pounded glutinous rice, form them into little rounds, fill with whatever sweet yummies you like, wrap them and form into balls, or whatever shapes you wish, and then steam them - the boys made traditional songpyeon as well as "punishment" songpyeon for the losers of the day - yut - special note, yut sticks aren't usually that large - they're typically around the size of thick chopsticks and easily tossed by one player with one hand - they are kinda like dice in that way - the board game portion - you move your pieces based on what you throw on the yut sticks - the whole point of the game is to move your piece through the board and complete it - however, there is a strategic aspect to it, in that you can decide which directions you want to go on the board to get to the final destination, as well as whether or not you want to sabotage another player by landing on their space and sending them back to the beginning - gul, gae, do, yut, mo - these are the names given to the number of sticks that land rounded side up versus flat side up, determining the points and the number of spaces you can move on the board - Youtube has videos for a more detailed explanation - all these are traditional games, some being hundreds of years old, so they're designed to be easily played, with materials you can make or find - Koreans generally love games of all kinds, drinking games, competitions, just sitting around being bored, so you'll find a TON of different games in Korea, and most take nothing but time and people to play
