(Hey if you don't mind if I shared my post here too, as I don't think everyone tuned in to your little "fireside chat" on YouTube lol) πŸ˜… Anywho, about Discord, I'd say the whole betrayal arc was a necessary measure for his character and reformation, as it wouldn't be truly complete until his initial half-turn was challenged and he came through one way or another. He had to give it up, be tempted back into his old ways, lose it all, be at his lowest and then be embraced by Twilight as a real friend before he could see what Friendship really meant to him. Whatever deliberations we might argue about how we think he oughta make up for his crimes against Equestria afterwards (if he hadn't already; it did help that he suffered major consequences in being betrayed right back, then contributed to the defeat of Tirek, and showed genuine repentance). In any case, he's now truly reformed and on their side at this point and won't betray them like that again. (whatever flaws he still has to work on) And now to reference the story/analysis I was just reminded of and I've wanted to share with you when you passed the Season 4 finale. One I have referred to alot over the years in defending Celestia and her actions in the series (I'm sure some points you'll find familiar πŸ˜‰), but it does touch on Discord too a bit. . . "The Folly of Celestia" by The Fiery Joker https://youtu.be/ufW5tpG_eAQ

Sometimes, when we are in pain because of something someone else did, true, them telling us "I'm sorry" doesn't solve anything, and at the moment it might not do anything for us as we might not be ready to forgive, but that "I'm sorry", if it was genuine, plants a seed. As we heal and reflect on everything that happened, the fact that they were indeed sorry may start to take meaning, especially if they have given us room and have done their part to atone. It paves the road to that forgiveness. I mean, just imagine, someone hurts you, and when they see how much pain you are in, they just make excuses or just walk away without saying anything. When we heal and reflect, our memory of them would be of someone who couldn't even show the slightest bit of remorse. An "I'm sorry" would not have solved the problem as it happened, but it would have made things better in the long run. However, if despite being genuine, we refuse to let that person's efforts and remose mean anything, and we make an effort to hang onto our disdain for them due to what they did, then at that point, we are actually the problem and not them, and we are probably in need of seeking a mental health professional.

I'm so glad you liked their designs, I always felt bad for being one of the only few fans that thought they looked awesome xD

eh, a lot of cartoons have big fight scenes, it's still clearly a kids cartoon no matter how you spin it. "kids cartoon" is basically split into 2 audiences though and thats the "dora the explorer/wow wow wubsy" educational only that adults wouldnt enjoy and then the "general audience" cartoons which would include stuff like teen titans, gravity falls, and of course MLP, which are cartoons that anybody can enjoy, even if its "made for kids." anybody who didn't place mlp as a general audience cartoon just didn't watch the show.

I think the difference is that here, Tirek is absorbing the magic energy to power himself, wheras the other event is taking the magic and storing it to use. Difference between digesting/consuming the energy and putting it into a battery and expelling the same kind of energy. But everything he does with the magic is his own magic, he's not doing alicorn/unicorn/earth pony things with the magic.

I thought they were cool. I wouldn't want them to be the default characters because they're pretty gaudy, but I actually really liked them for power-overflowing super heroes.

Something I just noticed after re-watching the show: Tirek simply absorbing Discords magic is kinda impressive. I won't spoil anything of course, but later in the series it is shown, that Discords magic is very difficult to control because of its chaotic nature. So either Tirek is stronger than I thought, or it is something like "he just absorbed it, but isn't actively using it"

I think I can speak for everyone here when I say this next 2 things.... First... I'm pretty sure nobody expected this finale.... Let alone this whole show to have a Dragon Ball Z level Fight like this one xdd, Twilight vs Tirek remains as one of the biggest proves that Bronies use to demonstrate to others that this series is a lot more than just a kid's show. Second.... I'm sorry to break it to you David but I'm also pretty certain that the great majority of the Brony Fandom (me included) agrees that the "Rainbow Power" designs -as they were called- are pretty ugly xdd. And it's ok... Everyone can have their own opinion of course... I'm just letting you know that you are mostly on your own on this subject xdd.

I know that the season 8 finale villain was divisive.... But those people are crazy. He/she/they were an amazing villain.... The best one of the entire show in my opinion besides Discord and Starlight.

Something I love about the series is they have some amazing villains. Some are misguided and can be redeemed and others are beyond redemption, but that's a choice they themselves make. I think that fits well into your question about forgiveness. Is "I'm sorry" enough? Not for a deep wound. In that case it's just a start. But it needs change. Words without action are meaningless, and part of that atonement you mention is being better in the future. All of the villains, especially the season intro/finale ones are epic and bring a lot to the series. I even enjoyed the season 8 finale villain, which was fairly divisive amongst the community at the time, and still is. But for those of us who know somebody like them, it's interesting to see that type of person represented in a show.
