So, in my humble opinion, what you need, what we all need, more than anything is to be looked after.
And if you grew up like me, or pretty much anyone with a pulse, it’s more than probable that you’d want to find that support in another person. And despite the growing push to be your own greatest source of love, there’s truly nothing wrong with wanting to be cared for. Human beings were made to be together, live together, grow old and learn together. Family, friends, whoever can be an immense and vital support system - a circle of close connections that help us through and make all the confusion and heartache worthwhile.
So, I’m not here to say that you should love yourself more than anyone else, that you’re the best person to take care of you, because, honestly, sometimes you’re not. Sometimes we’re the very last person who should be taking care of us. Sometimes we’re a god-damn danger to ourselves. So, it’s really important that we can make connections, have good people around us, and trust in others to take care of us sometimes.
This is not about being constantly self-sufficient or not. This is simply about doing what you can, when you can. Because, really, that’s all we’ve got. Life is not a fixed thing. How we feel and how capable we are to deal with ourselves and situations is not fixed. Sometimes you will be the best person in the world to look out for you, sometimes you’ll be the best person to take care of your mom, your sister, your friend. Nothing is a constant, we go through shifts, changes, events, and the only consistency in it all is that change is inevitable.
What all this rambling really comes down to is do it because it’s good for you and the people you care about. Like it or lump it, we do not just affect ourselves. If you have any relationships at all, you will affect others - both positively and negatively. And if we have a say in which one out weighs the other, which we do - then why not make it the former? The outcome is not guaranteed, but chances are always possible.
So, try. Try sleeping enough, try doing enough, move your body, go for a walk, listen to music, text your friend, take your medicine, sign up to that dating site, work towards being a more together, functional you. Try because you can. Because if you do, people will benefit, including you.
All the best,
Tea
