CRAZYPLACE - TIMELAPSE 12/01/24

This week I've been working with Hybs on a crazy place style map, taking place in an expanded and reimagined version of the crazy place from origins! Here is a 40 min timelapse of the entire creation of an area themed around the fire staff!

TIME ELAPSED - 6h 43m 44s

This area is based on the concept piece that I showed off on here last week however it's been expanded with a lot more detail put into it. The core layout remains mostly the same. I wanted to show this off to show my process when designing a completely original area, I first start with a concept piece which just aims to get down the basic layout / feel of the area without any crazy detail. Once I am happy with this I can start making the main area using the concept as reference, when doing a map remake such as MOTD this process is much easier and you already have a reference to go off. I then start out with basic geometry, getting the layout of the area correct and making sure everything plays well, I test multiple times in game running around and just making sure the area flows well. For this area in particular it is a bit easier and it will not be connected to the wider map (you enter / exit through the portal) but for a map like Vegas, which is totally original, you have to do this blockout process on a map wide basis and have to make sure that every area not only flows well but also connects well to every other area on the map.

Once the layout is done and I am happy however, I can start lighting! I kept this area quite dark as I wanted the main source of light to be the lava that flows underneath the floor, I had an idea of doing a hole in the ceiling and having light coming down through it but I decided against it for this particular area, I think that idea may be better suited for another area of the map. I used a lot of volumetric lighting techniques to give the illusion that the lava is emitting a haze out of the ground. I also added a few blue and yellow lights around to give the area some contrast, I kept to primary colours for this area though as those work best when trying to make an area look natural.

All in all I'm pretty happy with this area so far and I think it'll be a great addition to the map! If you'd like to see more updates on this project in particular go check out Hybs on twitter, as for me it's back to working on Mob and Vegas!
