Monster magnet meets aluminum can...

So many videos I watch on eddy current experiments only explain how they create a repelling magnetic field. However, they can create an attracting field too... Time to tell about both possibilities.

In my new video, I dig deeper into the eddy current effect by exploring the magnetism of aluminium. Even a mundane drink can will demonstrate the two different magnetic reactions of aluminium.

I also test how cylinders made of different elements roll off a magnet. Can you guess which element rolls of a magnet the slowest: Aluminium, copper or silver?

Find out in my latest video!

Interesting. "Steel" is a broad term. Many of them are ferromagnetic, others are not (like some of the stainless variants), so it's impossible to predict without further info. Do try it and let me know what happens. And yes, I would like to know where you bought them. Though I am more interested in sheets of mu-metal for building a shielded case/cage for my 150x100mm magnet :D

Yay Eddy currents are so cool! I have an experiment to try now, and I hadn't thought of it until this video: I recently got two (400 mm x 400 mm) sheets of (1.7 mm copper)-sandwiched-between-(0.2 mm steel): any guesses whether a magnet dropped over the sheet will fall faster than gravity, slower, or the same? I'll report back when I try! I don't have any extra large magnets, but I'll try with what I've got πŸ™‚ @Brainiac75: If you want to know where I got the sheets I'm happy to put you in contact! It might make an interesting video πŸ™‚ They shipped from Belgium so it's probably cheaper for you (and it's very useful as a baking sheet/griddle/plancha for tortillas, which is why I bought them haha). I'm actually planning to use induction to turn them into a tortilla press, so very similar physics at work!

Yep, I did not expect the aluminium cylinder to roll that slowly...
