The Portentous Realm

The white sun razes a world erased from memory.

Iron-limbed and amethyst-veined, its people haunt the barrens,

Silent, ageless, their faces lowered to the blistering stone.

They are relics of an epoch long unspoken, alive yet immutable.

Canyons shudder with the grind of their ceaseless passage.

Their dominion is the void, a desert unyielding, uncaring.

No gods remain to claim them, no minds to recall their names.

Only the undying endure, guardians of a forgotten world.

----------

I have been practicing watercolor painting lately and wanted to make an illustration for you guys about a Dwarf Fortress world I generated: The Portentous Realm

I used advanced world generation to make an incredibly hot world where dwarves/elves/humans/etc cannot exist. Oddly, I found that with the progression of time amethyst men and iron men would sprout up despite being non-breeding people. Dragons/ettins/cyclopes etc still exist in this world, but do not leave their lairs.

I thought the idea of a world where undying creatures must stay within their cavern homes and have nothing to fight for or against strangely evocative and somewhat sad. I wonder what they think about inside their little stone prisons. Am I a monster for generating this world? What came before? What will come after?

This sounds like a fascinating world.

I love the watercolor - very partial to watercolors in general and yours is very well done!
