Muy bueno todo, saludos desde Argentina

Thanks so much, Joe. I think I will soon have a.......passable interpretation 😉

Hi Jim - whoops! I think I ended up replying below in separate comments. Hope it helps!

Also if it helps, I generally have no idea when I’m playing the riff what “number” I’m actually on of the 5 compared to what number of the drums’ 4/4 😆. But occasionally in weird fishes I do keep in mind if I’m changing chords on an upbeat or a downbeat

So TL:DR haha - look at the patterns, and isolate the unique notes/accents, you can almost sing along to those as their own melody and just fill out the spaces with the repeated notes.

For let down I’m almost putting the in between notes out of mind entirely, just thinking about when I’m going to hit the next ringing note up top. Similarly for the top notes of Weird Fishes, which moves in the opposite direction.

Hi Jim! Glad to hear you’re digging in on the polymeter stuff. I think the idea of “1 2 1 2 3” mostly helps me think about the picking pattern (especially when fingerpicking) and how it folds in upon itself - as in there are 5 notes in each repetition, but obviously only 3 are unique. The accent can fall at different points depending on the song. For Let Down it is clearly the “3” note (fifth and final) whereas for the live Weird Fishes it is both of the “1”s. I think focusing on the accents and how that leads to a melodic idea rather than worrying too much about all the math in between is a great way to internalize the feel of the riffs.

Hi Joe, I find myself learning Jonny’s polymeter stem parrot fashion without really understanding the timing, which is a bit of a cop out. In one of your videos on polymeter you reference 12 123. Does this relate to the picking pattern and ‘accenting’ the 3? Just trying to understand the math here so I learn something more important than where to put my fingers. Thx!

Thanks Jim! Hmm... when I click the file link above it seems to redownload and play fine for me. Would you like me to try sending it to you separately as well?

Good point! While Jonny plays it different every time, I typically do some noodling (lots of randomly timed layers, maybe 3-4 seconds of loop length) on the high B and E strings at the 17, 19, 20 on B and 17, 19, 21, 22 fret on E. These are in the D major scale which is equivalent to the B minor theme of the outro and the E dorian modality of the main body!

This is ace, Joe! Unfortunately I can’t get the ‘Thom guitar stem.wav’ file to play. Doesn’t seem to ‘download’. Any chance you could take a look (while I’m tackling the mental timing of the Jonny bits 😫)

This is sounds absolutely amazing! but is there a tab sheet for Jonnys loop guitar?
