Why Bojack and Todd Were Never Really Friends. (Unedited)
Added 2024-07-10 06:56:22 +0000 UTCA bit of a bold statement, I know, but I never really felt like their time pre-season 3 was actually built off of a mutual interest and the fact that they had a good time together. They never really hung out, it was more just Todd being generally "around". In fact, most of their relationship was built off of circumstance entirely on both parts. Todd needed a place to live, and Bojack needed to avoid loneliness. That's why it's not surprising Todd couldn't keep Bojack in his life after his many mistakes, even if he did rely on him for lodging.
I don't think that they disliked each other at all, but I certainly wouldn't consider them good friends. They're not really there for each other emotionally, save the for the grand gestures that Bojack pulls to get him back living with him, and Bojack especially doesn't even particularly seem to like or listen to Todd. So then...why were they around each other?
This is an extremely realistic depiction of some types of friendship, though, as there are times where people are not friends by their own choice, but instead by lack of choice. And I think they could definitely develop a relationship in the future, but for the duration of the show, I don't think this was a friendship.
