Oh, Murakami is such a great author! I love how his works lean into the seedy underbelly and traumas of life, but in a tender way that humanizes the characters' choices and circumstances rather than playing them for shock value or moral high ground. I also love his hazy blend of memories and surrealism. Reading his works is like being in a rundown jazz club at 2am while an aging beatnik waxes rhapsodic about his youth in a way that is both raw and heavily tinted by nostalgia.
