As promised, we told you we would update you about the accident and all the craziness that was going on in the past month.
Concerning the accident:
The detectives in the Long Island Sound area actually tracked down the people and arrested the male for reckless boating! The couple did have boat insurance (which was a surprise) so we were able to get all of that information from the detectives as well. While they were looking for the couple, we contacted the best fiberglass repair guy around the area and took Calypso there to get checked out. The damage will end up costing about 4k but it is mostly cosmetic and will not prevent us from cruising ((thank goodness!)). We will be getting that fixed in October with him when we are on our way back down the coast. Since getting the couple’s information, we have filed the claim with their insurance company and now are just waiting for their approval and our money.
If these people would have just made sure we were okay and given us their insurance information this whole thing would have gone much differently. They chose to hit and run so we had to go about pressing charges. We don’t want them doing the same thing to someone else one day. Maybe this will be their lesson.
Concerning the Radar:
We had the radar sent off with no idea how much the repairs would cost or even if it could be fixed. This was so nerve-wracking because we need the radar as we head more north. We got the GREAT news that the motor had separated on the inside and the sensor was ticking (yay! finally an easy fix!). We think the damage was from the tropical storm that hit us a few weeks back.
The silly part is that it was more expensive to ship the radar out than the actual repairs were. To fix all of it was $150-- this was definitely our cheapest fix yet. The cost for shipping was $200 to get it to Washington state (lmao).
With everything that has been going on between the storm, my grandfather's passing, the radar repairs and the accident, we have been set back in our cruising schedule. Last week we finalized everything with the radar and accident, and were so excited to continue on to Maine! The next step was to see if it was still possible to get there. We contacted our weather guru Chris Parker to see if it was still do-able. He told us that it is definitely possible, but it would be risky and on the way back down we might get into some difficult cruising weather. The winds will be switching and will be difficult to get back south. We would have to do very short hops and wait for long periods in between the hops to get back down south. After thinking about all of the options, we decided it was best not to go all the way to Maine. We stopped in Provincetown (also known as p-town) in Cape Cod and decided to make this the furthest north we go.
We are very thankful we made this decision because 10 days after we made it, we found out there was a hurricane headed straight for Maine and the weather is absolutely awful. It will be difficult enough to get out of CT-- I can’t imagine how long we would be stuck for if we had decided to make the trip.
Sadly, no more Maine, but we are still exploring all of the fun towns in Massachusetts. Currently we are in Bedford and our plans are to go to Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Block island before we get back to get our boat fixed. That being said, you know the weather and it might not even let us do that. That’s where we are at, hoping to get to at least one of these places but the weather will be deciding that for us.
We really wanted to update you with all of the loose ends from the previous posts, and it’s all good news. These situations could have gone in different ways and we are so happy to have our health, our radar, a good fiberglass guy and our good weather guy to keep us safe along the way!
Until next time!
Side note about the picture above: Trying to soak up every last bit of warm weather in my bikini addiction bikinis before it gets really cold 🥶
