UPDATE!

As promised, we told you we would update you about the accident and all the craziness that was going on in the past month.

Concerning the accident:

The detectives in the Long Island Sound area actually tracked down the people and arrested the male for reckless boating! The couple did have boat insurance (which was a surprise) so we were able to get all of that information from the detectives as well. While they were looking for the couple, we contacted the best fiberglass repair guy around the area and took Calypso there to get checked out. The damage will end up costing about 4k but it is mostly cosmetic and will not prevent us from cruising ((thank goodness!)). We will be getting that fixed in October with him when we are on our way back down the coast. Since getting the couple’s information, we have filed the claim with their insurance company and now are just waiting for their approval and our money.

If these people would have just made sure we were okay and given us their insurance information this whole thing would have gone much differently. They chose to hit and run so we had to go about pressing charges. We don’t want them doing the same thing to someone else one day. Maybe this will be their lesson.

Concerning the Radar:

We had the radar sent off with no idea how much the repairs would cost or even if it could be fixed. This was so nerve-wracking because we need the radar as we head more north.  We got the GREAT news that the motor had separated on the inside and the sensor was ticking (yay! finally an easy fix!). We think the damage was from the tropical storm that hit us a few weeks back.

The silly part is that it was more expensive to ship the radar out than the actual repairs were. To fix all of it was $150-- this was definitely our cheapest fix yet. The cost for shipping was $200 to get it to Washington state (lmao).

With everything that has been going on between the storm, my grandfather's passing, the radar repairs and the accident, we have been set back in our cruising schedule. Last week we finalized everything with the radar and accident, and were so excited to continue on to Maine! The next step was to see if it was still possible to get there. We contacted our weather guru Chris Parker to see if it was still do-able.  He told us that it is definitely possible, but it would be risky and on the way back down we might get into some difficult cruising weather. The winds will be switching and will be difficult to get back south. We would have to do very short hops and wait for long periods in between the hops to get back down south. After thinking about all of the options, we decided it was best not to go all the way to Maine. We stopped in Provincetown (also known as p-town) in Cape Cod and decided to make this the furthest north we go.

We are very thankful we made this decision because 10 days after we made it, we found out there was a hurricane headed straight for Maine and the weather is absolutely awful. It will be difficult enough to get out of CT-- I can’t imagine how long we would be stuck for if we had decided to make the trip.

Sadly, no more Maine, but we are still exploring all of the fun towns in Massachusetts. Currently we are in Bedford and our plans are to go to Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Block island before we get back to get our boat fixed. That being said, you know the weather and it might not even let us do that. That’s where we are at, hoping to get to at least one of these places but the weather will be deciding that for us.

We really wanted to update you with all of the loose ends from the previous posts, and it’s all good news. These situations could have gone in different ways and we are so happy to have our health, our radar, a good fiberglass guy and our good weather guy to keep us safe along the way!

Until next time!

Side note about the picture above: Trying to soak up every last bit of warm weather in my bikini addiction bikinis before it gets really cold 🥶

Oh my, that sounds awesome!! The first boat we ever considered buying was an Oday...Great little boat! Provisioning?! What a way to break you into the sailing world...I usually do a big provisioning every two weeks and it can be a lot of work but has become my new normal ;) We just sailed that area that you mentioned previously and it was absolutely gorgeous! Love hearing about all of your adventures!! Brittany

Alas, I was beginning my high school senior year and only had the invitation to join them and helped them to provision their boat. If you get to do it in the next few years, I can live vicariously through your voyage, as I have for several years here on LazyGeckos. It did inspire me and decade later in the Summer of 1977 did lots of sailing out of Boston harbor, including a 10-day from Boston through the Cape Cod canal through Buzzards Bay and Wood Hole to Martha’s Vineyard and back, on an Oday 23’ monohull. Lots of work and lots of fun.

Good morning Simon! What an adventure that must have been!! It obviously left its mark on you that has become an everlasting memory ♥️ At the moment we're in Port Jefferson and plan to hit Port Washington tonight. Then we'll be off to the NY, I don't know exactly where you're located but you could always message me to see if it will work out :)

Glad to hear things are resolving in your favor. As a side note, back in 1967 when Montreal hosted the World Expo 67 , I was asked to be the crew for a couple doing a 4 to 5 week circuit up the Hudson River, through the locks into Lake Champlain into the locks up to the St Lawrence seaway to Montreal. After which the route was East down the St Lawrence out to the Canadian Maritimes and down the Coastline of New Brunswick, Maine, N.H., Massachusetts, etc. With all the stops of incredible interest (West Point, Lake George, Lake Placid, Montreal, Thousand Islands, Nova Scotia, Halifax, etc.) I would think more on 10 to 12 weeks, but a great summer adventure, to consider. Best wishes for a great return trip south. I live on the CT NY border and would love to watch your transit past us.

Hey there Jason! Thank you so much for the compliment! You're absolutely right, Maine will still be there next time around and wet'' probably be able to enjoy it that much more too!

Good deal on the offending couple. Glad to hear they will have to own up to their behavior. Also, happy to hear the radar was an easy fix. Maine will still be there next time you get the opportunity. Enjoy what is left of the mild weather and safe travels heading south!

Good morning Steve! Things are definitely starting to turn around for us :) No we aren't from Maine, Brittany is from Canada and Jeremiah is from Maryland. Maine was more like a goal that we will have to reach at some other time ;)

Good update sounds like things are going fairly well. Where are going to spend the winter? Are you from Maine? My dad is from Ogunquit-beautiful coastal area. Safe travels.
