We've used our Canon 5D Mark IV as our main camera for a while now. It’s a great camera for both photos and for filming but we knew that we needed another one if we were going to have others film important moments. Having another point of view is awesome, we knew we'd be having guests so we decided to purchase this Canon XC-15, also known as our "drop camera".
The drop camera is for guests to grab and easily film with. We actually have it sitting on their bed when they arrive! It’s great as a point and shoot camera that easily focuses on what you're filming in the moment. It’s pretty simple to use if you're not familiar with the filming and editing process.
Recently we noticed an issue with our main camera, the Canon 5D. During playback the video would have static over the audio making the footage unusable. Thankfully this happened during our time in the states so we began troubleshooting the issue. First, we purchased a new mic for the camera hoping that this was the issue but it turned out that it was an internal issue with the camera itself.
We contacted Canon a few days before we flew back to Grenada asking how to properly go about fixing the issue. They suggested we ship it to them to get fixed and that’s exactly what we did. Canon ended up replacing all the internal audio hardware and shipped it back to our mail service in Florida, where the camera is now. The cost was right around $500.00USD for shipping, insurance and the fix. Jeremiah and I both agree that it was worth paying a small fraction of what an entire new 5D would cost us. They're about $5000.00USD with the lens. The camera is what captures almost all of our most beautiful scenes...It's an amazing piece of equipment.
In the meantime we've been using our drop camera, it’s been great! At first i didn’t want to make the $2500.00USD purchase for this camera but now I’m so happy that Jeremiah talked me into it. Having a spare on board has allowed us to film moments from another point of view and now to use as a spare which saved us!
Now we just have to figure out how to get our 5D back to us in Grenada without paying a huge import tax!…Going to work on that now!!
