In short I would say that Jeremiah does...But let's get into a little more detail about that!
The process really begins from the time you pick up the camera. Well, first you have to remember to actually pick it up! It's easy to forget to record something as it's happening. Especially it it's something worrisome. Once you do pick it up though, the footage needs to be good. If the footage isn’t good then Jeremiah can’t use it. That’s why it is very important to think of composition when filming, over the years I believe I've really improved on that. You also have to make sure that the mic is properly set and plugged all the way in, I can’t tell you how many times we’ve not been able to use footage because the audio cable was out a little bit. No audio and you're finished! And you don't know it was out until you watch it.
Once we have the footage, Jeremiah takes it and loads it onto a series of hard drives, he organizes it into categories to make putting the video together a bit easier. He also loads it on a back up hard drive, you never know when you might have a hard drive failure. Especially when you are around sea air constantly. Once that 's done he'll sit down for day one of the video editing process which usually means piecing the video together to make it fluid so that there’s a story behind it. He'll make sure that all the audio is good and the composition is worthy enough to be included in the video. Sometimes that's a major challenge because it's just usually just he and I filming. We don't usually have other people holding cameras, which would be amazing. So we have to get it right the first time. We also don't stage problems or anything else for that matter, we cannot stand when we see people do that. We want our episodes to be real. You won't find any staged issues on our episodes.
The next day he'll get into fine details like music and lining up the video to flow smoothly. Speaking of music, we use royalty free music. Which is basically an artist that will sell you the rights to use their songs. Usually about $20-$50 per song. He'll also add in any extras like gopro footage, flash backs to older videos, maps, etc. Once he gets a draft he'll type up some voiceover ideas for me. Then I sit down and do my voiceover which has become easier over the years, I can knock it out pretty quickly!
Then he'll fine tune the voiceover with the video, music and all that. After he’s watched it a billion times from the editing process we'll sit down together and watch the video straight through. He makes notes of things to fix like volumes, bad cuts between footage and so on. I watch and come up with names! I write down name ideas as I watch the video and we choose one together after the video ends. This is my first time actually seeing the video besides the parts where I'm talking. We also take this time to choose the thumbnail. Jeremiah will edit both the title and thumbnail to look as good as he can.
Once he corrects any notes he took, he will render (finalize) the Vimeo version. After that's done, he'll go back in and edit the video for YouTube...That means removing any footage that we want exclusively for our Vimeo viewers. Then he'll render the YouTube version and guess what...Watch that one again to be sure no mistakes arose in the re-edit!
After all that is said and done he uploads both the Vimeo and YouTube versions. Sometimes this takes all night. I would say that all together the editing process takes at the least 20 to 30 hours of time not including the time we put in actually filming the event, dumping footage onto hard drives and uploading.
I know what your thinking, Jeremiah does a lot more editing than Brittany and it’s true! However, I take care of everything else during this time like boat life, kids, Patrons, basically keeping our lives together and going! We're a team and we love it!
Jeremiah really does enjoy making the episodes...He's always enjoyed video editing and he really enjoys doing so in his retirement from the Marines.
I hope that answers that question! Feel free to send in any additional you may have!
