They said to wait, they were right!

When we bought Calypso we knew that she’d need some canvas work. This type of work is expensive so we decided to wait until we got to Grenada where prices are better. Other cruisers would always say “Wait until you get to Grenada before getting work done!” but for us that seemed so far away! Well, now we’re here and are so glad we waited!

After having a few companies come to the boat for a quote, we selected Tropical Sails & Canvas for the job. The owner seemed very professional and you could tell he took his job seriously. Our cockpit enclosure had been taped together due to tears, our mainsail and headsail were due for a good cleaning and rip repair. They had mildew stains from sitting for so long. Not to mention it was time to have them looked over and possibly restitched elsewhere.

We’ve also been planning to replace our mainsail cover with a sweet stack pack system, that’s what you see here. Removing the cover added another step to getting our mainsail up when underway. We looked at that as a safety issue especially when the sea conditions were not in our favor. Replacing the mainsail cover with a stack pack allows the sail to be easily raised and lowered from the helm.

We’re also replacing the sacrificial UV strip on the Genoa while here. It probably had about another year in it but prices are so good that we decided to get it all done now.

The total cost for creating a stack pack, replacing the cockpit enclosure, replacing the UV strip, and washing/restitching the two sails (along with a couple other miscellaneous items) was $2000.00 US. That may seem like a lot but you could easily spend between $6000.00 and $10,000.00 on all of the above so we jumped at the opportunity.

We're loving all the love Calypso is getting! More to come!!!

They said to wait, they were right! They said to wait, they were right! They said to wait, they were right!

Agreed and thank you!!

We'd love to make a short video about how it works...Jeremiah is so excited for it since he's usually the one to go forward to do all the prepping ;) If you look at the 3rd photo you will be able to see a zipper, all you do is unzip that and you are good to go sail :)

I agree! The cruising community is really good at sticking together and helping one another out - I've really enjoyed it and it has started to feel more like a family unit on the Island <3

Such a great deal!! The only downfall is that it's not done with urgency but that's ok because we have tons of time while we wait for hurricane season to pass us by...

Lazy Gecko Sailing

Yes I agree! It was kind of fun renting a car and trying to find these little canvas shops all tucked away on the Island :)

Whatever it takes to keep that beautiful boat safe and sailing ⛵️

Isn´t there any zipper on top of the stackpack? Would You make a short video about how it works ?
