The BVI's are full of many different little spots to stop, grab a mooring ball but they are lacking areas to drop the hook. Anchoring is discouraged, the BVI have installed mooring balls in almost every location. Some say it's to protect the reefs, some say it's to make money (they charge each boat $30 per night to use the balls). We found mooring balls over both reefs and sand...So it's probably a little of both.
We were so excited when we found this little anchorage. It's off an island called Eustatia Island which I believe the top dogs of Google own. We ended up going back 3 different times since it's not crowded and you're clear from paying $30.00 per night to stay on a mooring ball.
One of our favorite things to do is to have a bonfire when we find a secluded beach. We usually cook hot dogs and hamburgers for dinner over the fire, once the sun starts to set we gather some sticks and cook smores! The kids LOVE it...Ok, adults too.
The picture above is of us along with our friends on that very beach during the bonfire. This was the third night of their trip aboard Calypso, we wanted to show them a very different aspect compared to the night before at the Willy-T. Right before this picture was taken we had a nice beach easter egg hunt for the two little ones. They got lots of chocolate and the Easter Bunny also left them a basket each!
Update: We arrived in St. Lucia late last night and ended up anchoring in the dark which was very different and a little scary for both of us. I stood on the bow with a spot light while guiding Jeremiah through the anchorage so we could stay clear of running aground, hitting another boat or running over a mooring ball.
We woke up this morning and were able to see how well we did at anchoring in the dark. Overall I think we picked a great little spot and our anchor is holding well in 31 feet of water. The sail down here was awesome and one of our most enjoyable ones yet! We ended up sailing the entire way (200 miles) and only turned our engines on towards the end of the trip to help get us to the anchorage a little faster. It was epic!
